High five. Great Read.

Great writing. This was a delight to read, and many times I found myself laughing aloud at the characters.
At other times, I was ready to push other characters off a bridge, but they are already dead so that defeats the purpose.
My interest has been piqued. Love the cover, and looking forward to more webs of mischief, and insight from this bunch.

A quick, light read

This book is self-contained; no cliffhanger. At this writing there are an additional three books available in the series. There are no sexual situations or cursing. This book is suggested for mid-teens and older.
Lauren, Esmee, Alex and Charlie have a problem--they're dead. And, apparently, ghosts. This is the set-up for a light young adult series. Introduced to the Ghost Academy, they're given a choice: stick around and be trained to do good stuff to help the living, or walk into a portal that presumably leads to the afterlife.
The Academy, Hogwarts with all ghosts and only one living person, has teachers who specialize in different aspects of ghost education: transporter, healer, vengence, and the like. The teens get lessons on how to interact with the living, while at the same are evaluated for particular gifts that will direct what their role will be. In this book only two instructors are predominate, although others are touched upon. The other students are conveniently invisible, so the only contact the group has is with their instructors and each other.
Of course there must be forbidden doors, dangerous ghosts, real Ghostbusters, and a secret society of Deviants, who want the living to share the Earth, rather than move on.
The teen group starts out with a typical mix: a rich girl, an average girl, a boy who flirts endlessly with anyone he sees, and a quiet, gentle boy. As the book progresses, the teens start to have some confidence in their abilities and mature from two dimensional characters, into early three dimensional. The teachers remain stereotypically hard, sweet, or boring, as teens view teachers everywhere.
This reader had only one issue with the story: what appears to be a lack of consistency within the Academy. The Academy is supposed to be a thousand or more years old. One would expect nearly immortal adults to have a firm set of guidelines and protections in place. Instead, the teens are able to sneak into places they have been told are off limits, open doors they've been warned never to touch, go places they've told not to, and the like. One of the teachers is so abrasive and angry one wonders why he would be placed working with new recruits. The teens are told they no longer need to eat and discover food doesn't have much taste anymore, but there is a very active cafeteria line of invisible students.
On the other hand, it's refreshing to see young characters admit they are over their heads and bring their teachers to the situation, instead of miraculously demonstrating unlikely skills and knowledge and fixing the situation themselves. Here, the age of the instructors is neatly demonstrated when the teens don't receive the expected punishment for screwing up, and instead get a vague apology for being put in a difficult situation. One would think the instructors would have seen just about every type of mistake multiple times, and, unless death is involved, would have moved far past the excitable stage of test scoring, so the teens are reassured things got messy, but everything worked out.
This short book--longer than a novella but shorter than a typical book--moves along cleanly, and the characters are generally likable. The beginning is rough as the author tries to convey information without it sound like lecturing, but once the author hits her stride the book smooths out.

Interesting (in a good way) story!!

For me the story progressed a bit slow, but it could be that I was confused who the characters were from the get go. A lot were introduced within the first few chapters. But that said, I still followed the plot of this unique story.
