Increasingly frustrated by his inability to solve these riddles and to discover the motivations of his companions, Kettil finally learns the ghastly truth during a most unexpected confrontation in the icy depths of the rediscovered vehicle. The grand master of the deep-water thriller (Medusa, 1988, etc.) sails to coldest Chile, Tierra del Fuego, and antarctic points beyond to pick at the old sores and hidden horrors of Argentina's shameful politics. The job prospects for youngish Peter Kettil are not good. Declared redundant by the conglomerate that has bought out the ancient East Anglian firm for which he worked, Kettil, a fine sailor and an expert in the arcana of wood preservation, sees nothing for it but to become a consultant. His very first job is a doozy: He's summoned to the naval museum at Greenwich to meet with glamorous South American widow Iris Sunderby and Iain Ward, a blustering Scotsman who wants to apply his recent wealth to the search for an icebound 19th-century sailing ship discovered in Antarctica by the late Mr. Sunderby. The museum would like Peter's opinion on the ship's condition. Peter hires on, but the apparent murder of beautiful Iris by her hotheaded ``cousin,'' an Argentine student adrift in London, seems to doom the expedition. Mr. Ward, however, insists that Peter accompany him to Peru, where, after a hair-raising trek through the coastal desert and the maritime Andes, they find Mrs. Sunderby alive and in the clutches of a villain who has been enjoying her drugged favors and who may be her brother. Once rescued, Iris is still eager to fit out the motor sailboat for which the increasingly mysterious Mr. Ward has plunked down cash. The search will be anything but straightforward. The murderous student from London is not only in town but is eager to sign on the crew. And he and Iris are terribly interested in the kidnapper from Peru who has decamped to the Straits of Magellan, where he too plans to join the search. Located after some rather heroic seamanship, the mystery ship yields up its dreadful secrets and Iris's family tree is untangled. A sensational cruise. Sunderby's widow, Iris, bankrolled by mysterious "pools winner" Ian Ward, is determined to find the ship for both its historical interest and to prove her husband was right. But who is Iris, and what are her true motives? Do her enigmatic South American relatives hold the answer? Does the ship have any connection to the Argentinian Disappeared political prisoners? And who or what is Ian Ward, who has come into millions in a pools win nobody can find evidence of?

It's a solid basis for an Innes thriller, and he has pulled off these sorts of stories brilliantly many times. But 'Isvik' has its fair share of problems, and despite an excellent ending, the book does not stack up well against his best work.

The problems are twofold:

Firstly, the characterisation. While most of Hammond Innes' books feature an "everyman" protagonist through whose eyes we observe more interesting characters, Innes takes that element to the extreme here. Peter Kettil is a very weak and colourless narrator, and his main purpose is to constantly ask questions that are never answered. Despite expressing reservations about the trip and its purpose, he never stands up for himself, being content to just drift along with the journey. Ian Ward is similar; there are implications that he is everything from a government agent to an arms runner, but very little of his character is revealed. He's supposed to be shadowy and mysterious, but comes across as stubborn and abrasive, demanding instant decisions and answers from everyone else while never answering questions himself. He clearly knows more than he's letting on, but how much he knows, and what his true purpose is, is never really explained. Iris Sunderby is at different times a strong no-nonsense busineesswoman and a drug-taking flaky girl who sleeps with her relatives to gain information. At least Angel Connor-Gomez is consistent, being a clear antagonist with few redeeming features beyond his superficial charm.

Secondly, the story takes a long time to kick into gear. I know that Innes' books have always been more about the journey than the destination, but the first half of 'Isvik' doesn't go anywhere. There is some character insight into Iris and Angel, and some background to the Disappeareds, but the constant back-and-forth argument over the Connor-Gomez family tree adds nothing to the story. Unlike 'Solomons Seal', say, the exact relation of Angel, Carlos, Eduardo and Iris to each other has no direct relevance to the plot, and too much of the first half is bogged down in these roundabout discussions. The book does pick up significantly once the characters are on board the ship and begin sailing, but this is only in the last 100 pages of the book.

One thing I will say, the conclusion of 'Isvik' is outstanding, providing a horrifying but plausible answer to the questions raised throughout the book. Fans of earlier Innes books such as 'Maddon's Rock' and 'The White South' will find plenty to love here, with familiar elements such as a long trek over the ice and the abandoned ship locked in a frozen wasteland. It's a pity the earlier parts of the book couldn't provide a better build up to one of Innes' best ever climaxes.

The second half thankfully redeems 'Isvik' from what is a pretty lacklustre beginning. Fifty years after his first books, it does seem that Innes was less able to pull together his complex, interlocking, personality-driven stories like he was in the past. But the payoff in 'Isvik' is (mostly) worth it, so I would still recommend it to those Innes fans who can overlook a few flaws in their hero's style.

Why was this made into audio book

I can't imagine why anyone would publish this book in audio format. The story is told in first person and the character telling the story is an incredible whiner. The narrator makes a worthy effort at trying to put some spine into his voice but the author has created a spineless, insecure, overweight character who snivels throughout the book. What was Hammond Innes thinking?

About the Author
Seppo Virtanen received his BSc in applied physics, MSc in electronics and information technology (1998), and DSc (Tech.) in communication systems (2004) from the University of Turku (Finland). Since 2009, he has been Adjunct Professor of Embedded Communication Systems at University of Turku. He is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Embedded and Real-time Communication Systems and a senior member of the IEEE. His published academic research has been in the areas of hardware acceleration for protocol processing, protocol processor architectures, and hardware/software codesign methodologies for embedded communication systems. In the past few years, his research interests have been focused on platforms capable of handling the processing of communication protocols, DSP routines, and software defined radio algorithms and applications in parallel on a parameterizable hardware platform, as well as information security related topics in the embedded systems domain.

The Way We Love (And Kill) Now

This is a fresh new novel by a writer who’s worked in multiple formats. It appears to be a serial killer novel as male victims are found throughout Manhattan, all mutilated in a similar fashion. Sgt. Burt Brymmer heads the Manhattan Homicide Task Force. With the help of his partner, Steve Ross, he investigates the murders while dealing with his own demons. Brymmer’s life is more or less empty, while Ross’s is filled with difficulties. Brymmer has, however, begun to establish a relationship with a reporter, but he suspects that she may be the murderer of the men (or, in another wrinkle, one of the murderers of the men).

The plot is complex, with multiple victims and multiple suspects, but the book takes its energy from the dialogue between partners and lovers. This is not so much an ensemble-cast story (as with, e.g., Ed McBain’s 87th precinct series) as it is a ‘small set of individuals interacting’. The individuals are both sad and interesting, skilled and burdened. The dialogue is superb and it is peppered with occasional one-liners that are truly memorable.

Manhattan is evoked very nicely. New Yorkers will love the book, even though it portrays the city’s darker elements and denizens. The narrative is ambitious and textured but not ponderous or slow. Its major theme or subtext is ‘the way we love now’, which is to say, not particularly well and not particularly lovingly. The detectives must find their way in a world in which everyone seems to have lost their’s and the result is a memorable tale of detection that is also a running commentary on our lives and our culture, the latter of which leave little room for optimism. Finding that crease of light is part of Burt Brymmer’s quest and as we get to know him we cannot help wishing him well.

SGT Burt Brymmer is the leader of the Task Force in NYC - Homicide Division. Normally his elite group has a total of 7 detectives working a case but in this "Jackie' investigation, the number swells to 50. It appears a serial killer is on the loose and the pressure begins to mount on SGT Brymmer and his team. Well, 'ding dong' the race is on to find the killer of these men.

The author has a firm grasp on what makes people tick, for sure. To paraphrase Burt, if one expects nothing, one will be content. In solving crimes, I learned from Burt that the 'why' is not as important as the 'who' .Despite the multiple murders and more than tricky cases to solve (tricky dicky, did I write that?), Mr. Cody manages to interject lots of humor within the pages. I learned about Thailand and some cases there in which the men were hurrying home to avoid the ducks! Sending items by messenger in the City takes on an entirely new meaning, also.

Bodies keep piling up, the 'whodunit' thickens and the reader begins to wonder if SGT Brynner and his team will finally be able to find a solid clue that ties them together. Lots of pounding of shoe leather on the streets by many detectives to find the tie that binds!

All in all, despite the multiple murders and the serious side of that beast, the human nature side of this plays an equal portion for me. The plot has multiple twists and turns, characters are well developed and the ending also took me by surprise.

A detective story that's more than "just" a detective story, though as such, it's a fine one--intriguing from the start, logical at the end with not a plot-hole in sight. But I'm one of those readers who reads for more than plot and it's there that Manhattan Roulette really scores. Or soars. The writing is terrific. Quick-witted dialogue and deft descriptions. Insightful narrative that probes inner lives. The leading characters are so fully real that after you've traveled with them through the book, you want to pick up the phone and ask them how they're doing. New York is real too. As someone who lives here, I can promise you the author's got Manhattan down pat--not through a series of set-piece locations, but rather by conveying how life here is lived. By all kinds of people --the ones who get to live in that zillion-dollar townhouse and spend their afternoons shopping at Prada, and the rest of us, paying unreasonable rents for tiny apartments and looking for something approximating love. (Speaking of which, I fell in love with Burt Brymmer, the detective sergeant who's in charge of the case. What a wonderful character! I hope Mr Cody brings him back for another round.)

Steve calls Ted when some patients using the product develop extreme vaginal bleeding, but Ted pleads ignorance. When the situation worsens, Steve is put on to the Ecolabs PR head, the alluring Francesca Taylor, who suggests that he do his own field test with his patients using Restore-Tabs and placebos. Romance ensues, but when Steve contacts the FDA, attempts are made on his life, scandalous rumors about him begin to circulate and patient files are stolen. As Ted grows erratic and paranoid, Francesca offers to sneak Steve into Ted's office to retrieve secret information to build a case for the FDA. Shobin (Terminal Condition), a physician himself, builds a credible medical plot with unscrupulous Third World field tests and greedy entrepreneurs. The parallel narrative unfolding in Indonesia is at least as engrossing as the American section of the book, but the writing throughout tends toward ham-fistedness, and readers may have a hard time swallowing many of the outlandish plot twists. (Feb.)Forecast: This run-of-the-mill medical thriller should perform adequately, but no more. Word of mouth won't breathe vitality into sales, and it's questionable whether a novel that the publisher compares to "Robin Cook meets Michael Palmer" can develop a market personality all its own.

Youthful, handsome, and dedicated to those in his care, Steve embarks on a risky journey that leads to the discovery of the origins of the supplement and to a horrifying understanding of the true goals and character of its producers and distributors. Steve is an appealing protagonist, and it is his personal and family relationships that give this novel some depth and readability. There's also an educational aspect to this book, which raises issues about natural and herbal supplements as well as the regulatory loopholes that govern their availability. Shobin's fictional nutrient is derived from marine plants that are secreted in South Pacific coral reefs. The reefs are blown up, dried, pulverized, and sent to New York for processing; and clinical trials are conducted on poor Indonesian women. Unfortunately, the basic substance in the tablets is a too-potent estrogen. As the plot thickens and the pace accelerates, anxiety, desire, and advertising lead to overdoses, cancer, and death. The principals include unsure but persistent physician Steve McLaren, single mom Julia, and ex-marine turned "enforcer" Jack Buhlman. Shobin's style and characterization skills help keep the yarn lively and believable, the kind that fans of medical thrillers, detective novels, and other action genres should enjoy. William Beatty

A SUSPENSEFUL MEDICAL THRILLER

THE CURE-DELIVERS!

The CURE was the most suspenseful read I've gone through in over a year. What I like about David Shobin is his style. Most writers in this genre use shallow, stick-figure characters, but Shobin talks about real people with real issues. Hero Dr. Steve McLaren is an insecure former alcoholic who struggles with his disease.The thorny issue of euthanasia is very tactfully presented. Shobin is a master at getting the most out of his characters. For anyone who likes medical thrillers, this is a must read.

The REAL Little Italy of New York City

Growing up in the Bronx was an amazing thing, especially during the 1960s and 1970s. And though Arthur Avenue isn't as big as it used to be (Little Italy-wise), it's still a magical place. And unlike such grotesque places like Eataly, which is overpriced and pretentious, Arthur Avenue retains much of its traditional old-world quality. In some shops, it's literally like stepping back into another decade.

I have had this book for many years. I have also given this book as a gift many many times and the receivers (mostly relatives in Australia) are always ecstatic about it as the families were connected even from across the world, always remembering their relatives in the Bronx.

This book is a good primer on the establishments that still exist despite the various evolutions of the area over the decades. There are histories and recipes and personalities that represent not only the flavor of the food but the flavor of the culture that is retained in this little piece of New York City.

There are no bad restaurants on Arthur Avenue. I love Madonia Bakery but all are amazing. And the coffee on Arthur Avenue is the BEST in New York City, hands down. Roberto's is also an excellent restaurant.

This book is not a substitute for visiting Arthur Avenue. But, for people who lived here once, for people who have heard of it in other locations in the world, this book is a bit of nostalgia and a small primer on what is a little piece of heaven. Just make a few of the recipes and read a few of the stories and you'll be transported.

So Perfect....

In the late 40's my father was a pizza maker at the Half Moon Rest .I was just a little girl going to Mt Carmel school and church. Two men from the DC area wanted an authentic NY Pizza and off we went to Silver Spring MD.Over the years we had Arthur Ave. parties for my dad and all my friends were very familiar with it. Having no idea what to get my sister this year I googled Arthur Ave. Cookbook and there it was. The book is beautiful not only wonderful recipes but family stories, colorful pictures, maps etc. I was more then pleased. I actually went to get one for me and they were sold out. I will defenitley recommend this book....perfect for any table.

An exceedingly wonderful book full of uniqueness and attraction

I totally agree with the comments on this book made by the several customers above. But I also want to mention a couple points that have not been mentioned in their comments.
    While this entire book is written impressively well, I think its chapter six (The Certainty Mechanism behind the Uncertainty Principle) is the best of all chapters and most impressive, due to the following reasons or features that I have noticed. First, in this chapter, the concise information in [The Window on This Chapter] is presented in a manner that is exceedingly logical and convincing, also quite clear and simple. Second, the plain analogy at the beginning of this chapter is very interesting and attractive, thus can stimulate the great curiosity of readers. And after reading this entire chapter, I have realized that this analogy turns out to be perfectly accurate. Third, as a popular science book, the writing style of this chapter, like a competent and responsible guide leading tourists into a pleasant journey full of wonderful scenery, is rather unique and quite attractive. This type of writing style has the advantage in making the overall structure or organization of this chapter strikingly clear thus very easy to follow, also avoids or reduces the feeling of boredom at the same time.
    Fourth, this chapter introduces the newly revealed certainty mechanism behind the famous uncertainty principle (this certainty mechanism has been shown to be the newly found and verified electron-photon work-energy relationship that reveals and determines the relationship between the work accepted by an electron and the energy of its emitting photons). The discovery of this certainty mechanism is really a great amazement to me. This is because the presently prevalent opinion or interpretation about the uncertainty principle is that there is no certainty mechanism behind the uncertainty principle. So the discovery of the certainty mechanism behind the uncertainty principle totally overturns the presently prevailing opinion or interpretation on this highly famous principle. More significantly, this certainty mechanism, or electron-photon work-energy relationship, can be the most fundamental or essential relationship in the entire area of electrical engineering in the future.
    In addition, the arguments in this chapter are rather rational thus quite convincing. For example, this chapter (in P. 165) has the reasoning: “since the uncertainty principle is (said to be) a wonderful and amazing theory, clearly, even obviously, also plainly and undoubtedly, the certainty mechanism behind this principle will be even more wonderful and amazing.” Another example of this type includes, through a commentator (P. 206 ~ 207): “since the establishment of the uncertainty principle in the early 20th century has been said as a great achievement in science, it seems not inappropriate if one concludes that the discovery of the certainty mechanism behind this principle in the early 21st century is also a great and historic event in the development of science.” Through these arguments, it seems to me that this book generously shares the profound and great significance of the certainty mechanism behind the uncertainty principle

This is an excellent popular science book with great creativity and wonderful attraction

This is an exceptionally impressive book for the following several features. First, the overall structure of this book is impressively unique, which can help me read it easily and effectively. For example, there is a succinct [The Window on This Chapter] immediately below the chapter title of each chapter. The very brief information in [The Window on This Chapter] can make one know what this chapter is about to deal with very quickly. More impressively, what appears in [The Window on This Chapter] is extraordinarily logical, clear, simple and convincing.
Second, I can learn some important new knowledge from this book. For instance, after reading the chapter two of this book, I eventually understand why the speed of light is constant after knowing the mechanism of this why, which is revealed in this book. Before reading this book, while I had known that ‘the speed of light is constant or the same for all observers’ is the first and most important postulate of Einstein’s theory of special relativity, I couldn’t know why. More unforgettably, from reading this book I have learned and further realized that in science, a postulate or assumption doesn’t or cannot have the function or ability to answer the question of why about the postulate or assumption.
Third, the writing style of this book is pretty enjoyable. For instance, when reading the dialogue among a father and two twin sons (in chapter two of this book), I cannot help but have a big smile. After the smile, I can see or perceive the essence of the famous Twin Paradox even more clearly. In addition, the chapter ten of this book, because of its creative analysis and rational discussion, could make one have a reasonably optimistic view or outlook about the development and future of physics. Besides, this book, though a book of popular science, is full of the wonderful features of an excellent literature work. Anyway, this book is the best popular science book I have ever read, because I can get unexpected big harvests from reading it.

A great popular science book I like very much

I like this book very much because it finally answers the big puzzles existed in my mind over a long time. Nearly 20 years ago when I learned Einstein’s theory of special relativity, I was told that time runs slower at high speed, but I wasn’t told why. When I learned Einstein’s general relativity, I was told that time runs slower in a gravitational field, still I wasn’t told why. Now I finally know the two whys above after reading this book. More importantly, the explanations of these two whys in this book are simple, clear and rationally convincing, because this book has revealed the mechanism of why time runs slower at high speed, and revealed the mechanism of why time runs slower in a gravitational field.

What makes me like this book even more is that this book has unique, impressive pattern that has very strong expression. For instance, some parts of this book appear in the forms of (Narrator: ….) and (Commentator: ….). The materials in (Narrator: ….) can make the expression of this book become much clearer. The information appearing in (Commentator: ….) can help readers get the key points easily and quickly.
