malian blues is cool...

i bought this book after i listened to ali farka toure, tinariwen and some french speaker singers (amadou and mariam). This kind of music appears to be malian blues. although the book shows a lot of different styles coming from different places i find this book worth buying only for this section (4 pages). the reason for it is that it seems simply impossible to get information about this style anywhere else! futhermore the book not only give good examples but give you the theory that underlies the style (tuning and scales)...
for me its opening a lot, i started immediatly to write malian blues songs with my band... god bless the major pentatonic and dorian pentatonic scales!

Pretty much your only choice

Like many I was attracted to this book for its chapter on Malian blues, and it doesn't disappoint. It's also great for nearly any other African style of play- griot to malagasy- and the author, Banning Eyre, is a disciple of Ali Toure and Taj Mahal and all those other greats and has even recorded with some of them, so there's no question about his pedigree.
My only complaint is that there isn't enough! I really wish every chapter was its own book. The chapter on Malian blues is great and the explanation of each passage is scholarly, though short. It really is hard to find info on African styles of blues, so this opens up a world that was previously inaccessible to the West (though the music is prevelant and even popular in some circles, it's never been delved into in print). Definitely your best (and probably only) choice for this style of music. Get it.
