Obsessed!!

It’s been a while since I read a book that was on my To Be Read list and when I picked up Some Sort of Happy, I wasn’t sure how much I would like it. I was not prepared to feel such a bone deep connection to Skylar. On paper, we have nothing in common, but in my heart, I completely related to her. She is a middle child of three girls. So am I. She is very close to her sisters, so am I. Her sisters are awesome really high achievers. So are mine. And she feels like she has completely blown the things that people expected her to ace. So do I. Some of her inner dialogue was like reading my diary in the days following my realization that I was not cut out of the practice of law. I was around the age she is in the book when I had my moment of extreme self doubt and fear that I would never be successful.
So, from page 1, I was completely invested in Skylar’s character. This is my first Melanie Harlow book, but it will certainly not be my last. It’s a rare thing when an author can write romantic prose without it feeling overdone, cheesy or just plain embarrassing, but Ms. Harlow did it. I have SO many highlighted phrases in this book, it looks like the pages are yellow. Sebastian is hero like I’ve never encountered before. Struggling to deal with his obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) coupled with fear of commitment and lots of shame, Sebastian is incredibly frustrating. From his first encounter with Skylar, it became very clear that she was going to be the person in the relationship that kept them moving forward. Sebastian’s mind is bogged down by an almost crippling fear of hurting someone that in the beginning almost every sweet encounter was tainted by his inability to believe in the goodness of it. At the same time, his love for Skylar was breathtakingly genuine. He struggled because he wanted things to work out with her SO badly. He stepped out of his comfort zone early and often to let her know how he felt. And when he had moments of backsliding, he works really hard to get healthy so he can give their relationship a real chance. Skylar is also in the middle of a crisis. Bad decision making and doing what was expected of her rather than what would make her happy has led her to hit rock bottom. She is jobless, has had her one major accomplishment invalidated and at the age of 28 she is living with her parents and starting all over again. OMG I’ve been RIGHT THERE. EXACTLY. I only wish I had the presence of mind (and someone like Sebastian) to focus on my energies on what I loved and not jumping right back into the pattern of behavior that got me where I was in the first place. It was so sweet to see Skylar and Sebastian help each other out their dark corners and holes.
They are like the Ying/ Yang and was nice to read a couple people with REAL world problems. They communicated with each other and they both had individual goals that had nothing to do with their relationship. Ms. Harlow treated Sebastian’s OCD with a lot of respect and care and didn’t sensationalize or sugar coat any of the aspects of what it is like to live with someone with this disorder. A lot of the reviews called Sebastian a “difficult” man to love. I just couldn’t imagine how you couldn’t love him. What a beautiful soul who suffers from something he can’t control. And the things he could control, he worked hard on getting better. I love both of these characters. I loved this story, I loved their chemistry (JEEZ, it was HOT) and I loved how much they both resonated with me.
Skylar’s sister’s Natalie and Jillian’s stories can be found in Some Sort of Crazy and Some Sort of Love. Some Sort of Happy is part of the Happy Crazy Love Series and is FREE is you are a Kindle Unlimited member. I can’t wait to read them all! I highly recommend this book and it gets a obsessive 5 Stars from me!

So here’s the thing… Sebastian Pryce stole the show in this book. I don’t know that I was expecting that based on the blurb.. or the cover… but it’s what happened. I felt overwhelming love and sadness for him. I wanted to put him in this little bubble and help fix him but then I also wanted him to use his rope and talk dirty to me. Sebastian is an enigma. He’s a contradiction of worry and sadness mixed with a light inside that just begs to shine. He has so many sides to his personality - each one makes him endearing. There’s something about Melanie’s writing that just sucks me in. Some Sort of Happy (SSoH for short) had her signature dirty and funny… but there is an underlying sadness and struggle that plague both characters - each for their own reasons.
I really loved Skylar's character; she’s feisty, supportive, genuine, and funny. She’s a little lost, having not fulfilled her career goals like she intended. She’s lacking self-confidence because of the things that didn’t work out and compares herself a lot to her more successful sisters. But as we get to know everyone more, we see that it’s not always what it seems on the outside. Her sister the doctor is lonely. The sister that bails her out with a temp job working at her coffee shop has relationship issues. But Skylar is a wonderful person, she just happens to be very hard on herself. I loved how she just knew how to break Sebastian's walls down. It was like she had a sixth sense when it came to his fears and thoughts. Skylar really is a great a girl, even if she doesn’t fully realize it. It’s a good thing that Sebastian is majorly clued in.
Like I said earlier, Sebastian stole the show and really made this book something special. His issues gave this book a different kind of depth than what we’re used to with Melanie’s books. In the same moment I found myself swooning over the sweetness and tearing up over the fear that Sebastian struggled with. From page one, I just KNEW I was reading something special. SSoH is like a little piece of magic; it’s funny, it’s sexy, and it’s heart breaking. It broke me a few times, but the dedication and patience that Skylar showed Sebastian made my heart sing. Really this book spoke volumes about love and support and how you’ll attempt to do anything to be your best self for the one you love.
I love it when a book blows me away, makes me think, makes me feel so many different emotions and Some Sort of Happy did just that. I would love to see more Skylar and Sebastian… because I know their love, their struggles, their future is going to be something special. 4.5 stars

Some Sort of Happy by Melanie Harlow
BLOWN. AWAY. This is my first thought. UNEXPECTED. That is my second thought. And then, there's...OMFG THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVER I JUST WANT TO HOLD AND HUG AND KISS SEBASTIAN 8 TIMES AND I NEVER WANT TO LET HIM GO. Phew. Those are just some of my thoughts. What it boils down to is this. Melanie Harlow can write. She writes her f**king a** off. And we all know this. But then, she delivers SSOH, and it's like WHERE DID THIS COME FROM?!?! Because what she gives us, is a story that ripped my heart out. It had me crying, smiling, laughing out loud, swooning. Oh yes people. SWOONING HARD. Stroking, rope, and car sex. OH MY!! I was shocked. And awed. By her MC, Sebastian Pryce. How Melanie can create such a character, has me floored. How she brings together the seriousness and matches it with the hotness. And add in Mel's signature humor. What you get is perfection. I'm not going to delve too much into the story. Because I don't want to rob you of the not knowing, in case you don't know. Because if I say one thing, it might give away another thing. But I will totally fangirl as to why I loved it!! Let's start with Sebastion. He's not your typical BBF. He's complex, misunderstood, and has some serious issues. My heart broke for him over and over. And he also made it pound hard. Not just for the way he loved and cared for Skylar. But for the man he was. His strength. His courage. His struggles. He's not an easy man to love. But the words and thoughts that poured out of him!! God!! Let me share a few of my favorites. I think I might of highlighted this whole darn book lol!
I loved her, and she loved me. Now it was my responsibility to keep her safe. keep her safe.

See what I mean!! One of Sebastian's sayings was "Two is better than one" this is something that stuck with me throughout the whole book. And even after.
So let's move on to Miss Skylar Nixon. When I think of Skylar, I laugh. She's this ball of energy. Who loves to talk and pry. Some might find this not appealing, but as Sebastian found it adorable, so did I. She's always been "the pretty one" out of her sisters. So after some life wake up calls, she's forced to come to terms about some things and has some growing up to do. She needs to make some life decisions. And who better to help her?? Why yes, Sebastian!! She is the perfect girl for him. She stands up to him and calls him out. She's not a quitter and she believes that he is worth the fight. She's so patient and understanding. God. They are perfect. They are what each other needs. He builds up her confidence when she needs it most. They help each other and they grow together.
And those are some of my thoughts. Now I will enter total fangirl mode. BUY. THIS. BOOK. Read it. Love it. Gush about it. Because I firmly believe that this is THAT book. The book people are going to be talking about. They are going to be shocked. This is different than anything Melanie has ever written. But yet it still holds true to all the great qualities that are of Ms. Harlow's writing. It's still filled with all those hot and amazing sexy times. It still has Melanie's LOL humor. It still has the great side characters that Mel is known for creating. The ones that leave you wanting to know more and hope they get a story too. She has stepped out of her comfort box and took risks. And has given us a heartbreaking, beautiful, and powerful love story. A story that will stay with me probably for a lifetime. And that my friends, is why this is one of the best books I've ever had the honor of reading. Thank you Mel, for taking a risk and for bringing Sebastian and Skylar into our lives.
