Informative And Useful, But Far More Interesting At The End

I happen to have read this book after finishing two graduate programs, one a Master’s of Science in Engineering Management (a degree that is not mentioned in the course of this book), and the other a Master’s of Arts in Military History, but its information is useful for graduate students in a wide variety of fields seeking either Master’s or Doctoral degrees. As can be expected, this book has a “catch-as-many-as-possible” approach in its topics, preferring to tackle the most popular fields of study and the most popular concerns that insecure would-be graduate students have, meaning that people with unconventional graduate school interests are likely to find less specifically about them, and people of normal backgrounds (i.e. non-disabled straight white males) are likely not to find a lot of information specifically about their graduate school experiences. Caveat lector.

Nonetheless, the book is not completely useless, and indeed there is much information here that any graduate student in any program can learn from. Part One of the book introduces the reader to graduate programs–Chapter One looks at the goals of the reader (presumably a would-be graduate student), Chapter Two looks at finding information about graduate school programs, and Chapter Three looks at evaluating graduate school programs. Part Two covers the process of applying to graduate school–Chapter Four talks about the requirements of graduate programs, Chapter Five talks about preparing the application, Chapter Six talks about the ever-important personal statement, and Chapter Seven talks about what happens after you apply. Part Three is really the most “optional” part of the book for most readers, examining special situations–Chapter Eight looks at re-entry students, Chapter Nine looks at minority students, Chapter Ten looks at students with disabilities, and Chapter Eleven looks at International students. Part Four looks at the least “optional” part of the book, the part on financing the degree–Chapter Twelve looks at planning the investment, Chapter Thirteen examines sources of financial aid, Chapter Fourteen looks at the financial aid application process, and Chapter Fifteen looks at loans. Part Five, perhaps the most interesting part of the book, and certainly the most readable section, looks at specific courses of graduate study, which chapters on social work, education, psychology, nursing, humanities and social sciences, engineering, computer science, health, and science programs. The book closes with a lengthy list of internet resources for the reader who desires further information (especially about nursing).

Overall, the book is very informative, and certainly filled with useful information. There are some minor copy-editing flaws which could have been corrected with a bit more careful fine tooth comb, and the book is perhaps a bit front-loaded with more boring information, only getting really interesting to read towards the end as it talked about specific courses of study. Nonetheless, despite its flaws, it is a worthy resource for those seeking to attend graduate school with the desire to do it right, or at least begin with eyes wide open.

An easy read for any woman regardless of her age who wants a practical advice on how to be healthy and grow old gracefully with as few wrinkles as possible.

From its title the book promises to deliver an answer. And it does, not one answer and not a miraculous one pill solves all problems but a simple logical way to look at what effects every woman no matter her life style - aging and how we can deal with it.
It accomplishes this by reminding us of some very practical pieces of advice we received during our younger years, you are what you eat, your skincare regime is the most important contributor to good healthy skin and being active is not a duty but an aid to promoting health and well being.
It is an easy book to read as the tone of the book is that of a friend sitting having coffee with you.

I enjoyed reading it and gained a lot from it but felt it could have gone a little deeper into some of her statements, maybe even taken one or two case studies of how women have improved their health etc by taking more exercise, being practical about nutrition and not spending a fortune hunting for that miracle pill which will make us look twenty years younger. I did wonder, how many of us fifty something year olds would wish to go back to that era of our lives?

I had forgotten how much emphasis is placed on how we look today, and the book reminded me of this, which is perhaps a good thing as beyond having a strict skincare routine since I was a teenager, I now know it is time to make adjustments such as taking supplements etc.
I was hoping for a few recommendations as with regard to dealing with skin problems as we age but that is perhaps only a personal gripe. On the whole I enjoyed the book.
I would recommend it to all women young and old as we do become complacent about working on a daily routine to help us age slowly or more importantly age with less health complaints and less wrinkles.

As a dog owner for your 50+ years, I found this book to be enlightening, entertaining, an sometimes counter intuitive... but highly successful, when applied to training a new pup, or 're-training an older dog. Well worth the time it takes to read.

I found this book to be very helpful in my endeavors towards socializing my puppy, Sophie. The author delivers what she claims in a positive and reassuring manner. Her instructions are easy to understand and use for all members of my household. The book is a pleasure to read as well as having detailed and specified information that really works!
Sophie is quickly learning to understand her world and interact in it in the way we want her to!

Long before he thought about becoming a musician, William Basie, son of a Red Bank, N.J., coachman and caretaker, longed to "go on the road touring everywhere in the world of show business with a troupe." In these long, rambling memoirs, skillfully put together from tape recordings, the Count recollects his experiences as a traveling pianist in Missouri and Oklahoma, as a member (with Hot Lips Page and Jimmie Rushing) of the Blue Devils, as organist in a silent-movie house, with Bennie Moten's orchestra in Kansas City, and as leader of one of the greatest jazz bands of all time. Basie pays tribute to his colleagues and managers (and to John Hammond for "discovering" him), but does not hesitate to discuss their weaknesses and shortcomings; his language is direct and earthy. Although some of the book reads more like a catalogue or itinerary than an autobiography, it will have strong appeal for jazz buffs and fans of the late bandleader. Photos not seen by PW. January 1

Murray compiled this biography from conversations with Basie, who died in 1984. Basie is the narrator looking back at his first jobs playing piano in Red Bank, New Jersey; his performances with Bennie Moten's Orchestra in Kansas City; and his fame as a big band leader from the Thirties to the Eighties. Basie's entertaining memories of his early days of performing in movie theaters and sleeping in pool halls give a more colorful picture of life as a musician in the Thirties than would a conventional history or biography. His chronicle of later years of successful worldwide performances seems commonplace in comparison. Basie laughs at his own motives and foibles and reasonably and modestly assesses his talent in a colloquial style that makes this appealing portrait a valuable record of a personality and an age. Count Basie autobiography

I'm a big Count Basie fan and think "Good Morning Blues" is an excellent book about jazz. Basie talks about the clubs and theater gigs he played throughout his career from the very beginning to the high points of his career. He tells about the musicians who were in the many bands including, The Blue Devils, The Bennie Moten Band, and the Basie band, including many of the early theatrical groups he played for and toured with. It includes his early upbringing in Red Bank, NJ, and his effort to move up to better musical groups. He tells the stories of how poor he and his friends were including the time he and a fellow musician had to sleep in a pool hall and swiped bread from a bakery cart in order to eat. Later on he tells about making the move from Bennie Moten's band to forming his own band after the death of Bennie. He doesn't really dwell on discrimination but does tell a few stories concerned with the hard life for "sepia" musicians. He tells about his early mentor John Hammond from Columbia Records who helped promote Basie throughout his career. Also there are many stories of other musicians who played in clubs. It's a very positive book about jazz with very few disparaging remarks about other people. He tells about other musicians who he looked up to, especially other pianists; very little gossip but plenty of good stories about musicians and what happened during musical engagements. Basie says he was not a strong music reader and there is not a lot of music theory discussed. It is such a warm and positive book, you end up liking his music even more.

The Count Speaks

The book gave me some insight into the always-cool minimalist pianist who led the greatest and most dynamic of big bands. Though there is too much diary-like listing of the band's road schedule, still the Count discusses many of the musicians who drove the band and made it the wonder it was through all the years from its beginning in Kansas City through and beyond the "atomic" years. Modest and self-effacing, the Count expresses his admiration of all the great musical figures he encountered and gives credit generously. A good man fronting a great aggregation. The book enhanced my appreciation of all the Basie albums I own and caused me to acquire another five.

How Did They Do It?

How did Albert Murray and Dan Morgenstern manage to write an uninteresting and at times boring book about the great Count Basie? This is a sanitized and unemotional look at Basie's career. It is full of details that can only be of interest to a Basie historian- and that's about the only good thing you can say about it. I guess The Count wanted it that way. If you want to read everything about Basie that's ever been written, then buy this book. Otherwise, skip it.
