Who Eats Bugs?
�
Entomophagy (pronounced en-tuh-MOFF-a-gee)—that’s bug eating to you—has been practiced for many centuries throughout Africa, Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and North, South, and Central America. And the feasting continues according to Marcel Dicke, professor of entomology at Wageningen University and winner of the Dutch version of the Nobel Prize, with an estimated 80 percent of the world’s population eating bugs. Insects and their kin are enjoyed nearly everywhere except for Europe and the United States and Canada. That’s right: we’re the weirdos for not eating bugs.

It’s hard to say what motivated some of our forefathers to refrain from this widespread, nutritionally beneficial, and unquestionably wholesome practice. Quite possibly, our current disdain for bug cuisine was shared by the first farmers of northern Europe and, by extension, European colonists in the New World. They regarded most land arthropods, and insects in particular, as crop- and livestock-robbing pests. To these early agronomists, eating bugs was probably akin to sleeping with the enemy.

To discourage anyone from going over to the “other side,” they manufactured all manner of bad press for bugs. Hundreds of years later, fear-mongering pest control companies took the insect hate ball and ran with it. In their eyes, the only good bug was a dead one. Nowadays, most people in Europe and North America regard insects and other land arthropods as unclean, germ-laden, and foul tasting—three views that have little, if any, basis in fact.

Many of the world’s indigenous people still harvest and eat bugs, just as we do artichokes, oysters, and many of the myriad gifts from the land and sea. Did you know, for instance, that when faced with a cloud of locusts, native Algerians will break out the brooms and start sweeping their sudden bounty of insects into baskets and bags? Or that honey gatherers in Malaysia will sell the liquid bounty from a wild hive, but they’ll save any larval bees still in the honeycomb for themselves? How many of you have heard about the mopane worm business in rural South Africa? The fat, juicy caterpillars of the emperor moth are plucked from the mopane trees at Christmastime, after which they are gutted, dried, and sold at markets.

The first people of North America were avid bug eaters. I’ve read that members of the Klamath tribe of southeastern Oregon lit fires beneath trees to smoke out the caterpillars of the pandora moth, which would then fall to the forest floor, where the Klamath harvested them for later consumption. One chief is said to have amassed a ton and a half of smoked and dried pandora caterpillars during the summer of 1920.

“I have seen the Cheyennes, Snakes, Utes, etc., eat vermin off each other by the fistful,” wrote the nineteenth-century chronicler Father Pierre-Jean De Smet. “Often great chiefs would pull off their shirts in my presence without ceremony, and while they chatted, would amuse themselves with carrying on this branch of the chase in the seams. As fast as they dislodged the game, they crunched it with as much relish as more civilized mouths crack almonds and hazel-nuts or the claws of crabs and crayfishes.”

Although entomophagy may have fallen from favor among most of the members of North America’s founding tribes, it still thrives in the village markets of Oaxaca and a few other Mexican states. A favorite snack in these locations is chapulines, sun-dried grasshopper nymphs sprinkled with salt and seasoned with chile and lime. This delicacy, which originated with the native tribes of southwest Mexico, has been handed down from one generation to the next. The legacy of bug eating is also alive in the heart of Mexico City, where gourmet restaurants specializing in pre-Hispanic cuisine still offer cazuela de escamoles a la bilbaina—larval red ants, fried in olive oil and lightly dusted with dry red chile—to their discerning clientele.

I think this is one of the most important contributions to the anthropology of South Asia in the last twenty years. It rings profoundly true and helps us understand Indian civic identity in a manner unmatched previously in the literature. Mines finds a way to critique Dumont while not forgetting his important contributions. It provides an entirely new way to look at Indian identity and civic life - by thinking of an individuality which is defined by the relationships that a person has with others - but that leaves room for a sense of self. This is important readfing for political scientists, economists, as well as anthropologists, and would also be helpful to those in the development world working on demand-driven approaches.

Potentially a good book, in the right hands

The activities in this book are varied and serve to reinforce and improve basic French skills, I would not recommend this book unless you had some prior knowledge of French, any will do really. It also has grammar sections in each chapter and has nice vocabulary and culture sections. However, there are areas that aren't fully explained and if your teacher/professor is a French native then they should quickly be able to point out the books cultural mistakes and explain the little details (but very important) that the book leaves out. A willing student and a good teacher can really make this book work.

About the Author
Ivan Ristic is a security researcher, engineer, and author, known especially for his contributions to the web application firewall field and development of ModSecurity, an open source web application firewall, and for his SSL/TLS and PKI research, tools, and guides published on the SSL Labs web site. Ivan is an active participant in the security community, and you'll often find him speaking at security conferences, such as Black Hat, RSA, OWASP AppSec, and others. He's currently Director of Application Security Research at Qualys.

Must read book for developers, administrators, and security folks.

Comprehensive, thorough, and an engaging book -- a rare combination, especially for a field that is mired in jargon and subtle but critical technical insights. Imagine sitting down with an expert for a (long) cup of coffee, and getting and end-to-end story on SSL/TLS: the history of the protocol, how it works, what all the options mean, attacks and mitigations, performance and security best practices, and more. Best of all, everything is explained in approachable english, with lots of examples, citations, and tips.

If you've ever ran the Qualys SSL Test on your site (if you haven't, definitely give it a try), and felt overwhelmed by all the output, then this book is the explainer you've been looking for. By the time you're done, you'll know what all the checks are, why the tool is recommending particular configurations, and how you can go about addressing them on your servers.

The future of the internet is TLS everywhere, and this is a must read guide for developers, administrators, and security folks alike.

Comprehensive, Practical, and Accurate

This is *the* HTTPS book to buy, whether you're a web developer, IT administrator, security researcher, or computer science student.

Author Ivan Ristic's meticulously-researched book covers every important aspect of HTTPS, from cryptography, to public key infrastructure, to deployment and operations. Weighing in at a hefty 506 pages, it's unlikely that you'll read this book as I did, from cover-to-cover, so the author thoughtfully crafted the book with distinct sections so you can easily start with the content most important to your needs before (or instead of) reading anything else.

For security enthusiasts, there's excellent coverage of all of the major attacks against TLS and PKI over the last decade or so, from CA compromise to TLS protocol attacks like BEAST, CRIME, Lucky 13, and more. This book serves as an excellent resource on each of these attacks-- how they operate, and how to mitigate against them.

Web developers charged with keeping their sites fast as they move to HTTPS will appreciate nearly 30 pages of content on optimizing HTTPS for both the network and CPU, and fantastic coverage of OpenSSL will help you navigate the many functions of that powerful toolchain, even if your servers are running on other technologies. Thoughtful coverage on the tradeoffs between high security and interoperability problems is found in every chapter, to help you make the right decisions for your site's needs.

One of the best features about this book is its breadth of platform coverage; unlike many guides that cover only one particular implementation, Bulletproof SSL and TLS covers all of the major platforms including thorough sections on OpenSSL, Apache, Java/Tomcat, IIS, and Nginx, with comments and footnotes about more obscure platforms as appropriate.

The web is full of outdated, inaccurate, and conflicting information about how to configure and deploy HTTPS properly, which makes this book an invaluable reference which will remain on my desk for years to come.

Excellent book which needs a new title!

The title makes it sound like a boring sysadmin book on setting up HTTPS sites. I think it is better described as a book which gives you the context and history of PKI and SSL/TLS in terms of implementation, attacks and mitigations. Oh and it also has a section on sysadmin and some programming in the latter half of the book. For me, the first 200 pages is worth the price of admission. That's the kind of information that people get by doing hands on investigation, research and staying current in the field.

As a software engineer, I read a lot of technical books. It's rare to see a book like this which combines so many different elements into a cohesive book. It could be split up into 2 books: one on the history/context of the development and vulnerabilities of SSL/TLS and another on using OpenSSL, configuring certs and servers. I'm glad it's all one book so I only need to recommend one! There aren't many books like this on the market on any topic. It's rare to see someone cover the basics of the theory, summary of attacks and mitigations, and trade-offs with deploying in the real world.

The book's binding and paper is great as well. If you properly break in the book, it will lie flat all the way from page 30 onward. I didn't have any problems reading it on a bed. I read this cover to cover in part of a weekend. It was a quick, fun and informative read. After reading this, you should be ready to dive into the RFCs.

My criticism is light. I don't think the wikipedia references have much value. Everyone knows you can search for things. I think using the URL shortener links are annoying. What happens when your server goes down? And I wish there was a quick reference appendix at the end which summarizes recommended future reading. There were some book recommendations throughout the book and a summary of important RFCs. It would be nice to have that all in one place.

My Introduction...

This book discusses the art of the Japanese folding screen using the 23 screens in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London & the Ashmoleon Museum in Oxford. In the 23-page introduction, the author gives a brief history of painted screens & a look at some of the conventions of their use & interpretation. He also briefly discusses the major painters & their schools. The rest of this slim volume is devoted to color reproductions of ALL the screens, with commentary explaining the subject matter & stylistic features.

A few years ago I decided I would, just for fun, learn something about Japanese screens. I began with THIS book & Masterpieces of Japanese Screen Painting: The American Collections. From this book I learned the function of folding screens in Japanese architecture & the best vantage point for viewing them. Rather than standing up, a kneeling position seated on one's feet is the customary position for viewing the screen. From that point of view, the center of the screen is at eye-level. On p. 13 Impey discusses the system of vertical perspective that is common in screen paintings--a scene is viewed as if climbing a ladder & looking down. The screens in this book present a variety of subjects: many-figured genre scenes, illustrations of traditional literary stories, landscapes, flowers, & animals.

P.S. I can also recommend Designing Nature: The Rinpa Aesthetic in Japanese Art (Metropolitan Museum of Art) and Beyond Golden Clouds: Japanese Screens from the Art Institute of Chicago and the Saint Louis Art Museum.

Impossible to put down - even for a skeptic

This book was impossible to put down, and even harder to read quietly to myself. I kept grabbing my husband and saying, "Wait, you have to hear this." I read this at the recommendation of a friend as a lark. Before reading it, I didn't have any particular feelings about reincarnation. Sure, it is a cool idea, but I'm a highly skeptical person. Even after reading it, I still feel highly skeptical, but I'm also highly intrigued. What if...? Richard Bullivant has done a ton of research before writing this book. The stories he shares are engaging. He answers all of the "but what about..." questions that popped into my head as I went along. Now I can't wait to read his other reincarnation book to see even more stories. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but some of the 'evidence' that the reincarnated subjects offer, like that from a three-year-old boy in the West Bank, sent shivers down my spine. It is easy to dismiss people who claim to be reincarnated celebrities (though he makes an interesting case for one), but when someone claims to have been a nobody in a small town and can lead researchers to things that have been hidden for centuries...goosebumps. Whatever your beliefs, this is a fun read.

WOW! What can I say. This is my type of book as I have an open mind and love learning about other people and their beliefs. The book pulls a pretty hefty argument for reincarnation and I would love to know more - I am even looking up some of the other books mentioned in this book.
I found it interesting that both sides of the argument were investigated including the sceptics view of the situation. In some cases the sceptics really appeared to have no argument whatsoever.
The book also noted the qualifications of the people involved - these are not easily led simple people but highly intelligent professors and doctors. Well written and the arguments are well explained. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest unbiased review. I highly recommend this book.

Death is not the End!

I really enjoyed this book! Author Bullivant who is no stranger producing books about paranormal subjects has several other well received books based on paranormal topics which aptly acquaint readers with his assembled presentation of fascinating real life stories all of which are well researched and well recounted.

Although, a rather short book it was engaging, and thoroughly compelling to read, not only by virtue of the intriguingly contentious subject matter but also by virtue of the provocative real life cases which are presented, in his writing style which is comfortably appealing to read. The stories span from older documented cases to more modern cases including individual cases, group reincarnations, other planet reincarnations and more, all which present a pretty convincing case for reincarnation. What I found especially interesting was the chapter on the Science of Reincarnation, it was truly thought provoking.

Overall this was a great little book that readers will find is well worth the read, and I definitely recommend this book as a must read for both believers and skeptics as both could learn from it. I graciously received a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review from the author through LibraryThing.
