This book is a beautiful, sometimes tragic series of stories of fighters we all recognize. This is more than a "Where are they now?" report. The author is a former boxer and has great empathy and love for his subjects. The fact that he did his research on less than a shoestring budget just reinforces that author cared deeply for boxing and its heroes.

Great read, well written and inciteful!

A great read! A book full of interesting people, their stories and all well written. But best of all I actually learnt something about a sport that I already thought I knew a bit about. Altogether, this makes it stand well above your average sporting book.

Born to win, paid to lose

Ever seen a fighter with a ridiculously bad record like four wins and a hundred losses, and wonder what keeps him going? Wonder no more.

This book does a great job of exposing the underbelly of the boxing scene. Journeymen, contra popular belief, are skilled boxers who are many times better than their younger, fresher opponents, but are paid essentially to "carry" the other guys and help pad out their records. The author strikes just the right balance between letting the fighters speak for themselves and leavening the work with his own asides and commentary. The book focuses primarily on the U.K. boxing scene, but the themes it recounts are universal, and pretty much mandatory reading for boxing fans, as well as anyone with a general interest in learning good definitions of the concepts of "resilience" and "courage" or that intangible quality so important in boxing, "heart."

Some of the profiles in "Journeymen" are funny, including a tale about a pugilist who was drinking in the local pub when he got the call that he needed to lace up the gloves. Other stories are tragic and downright harrowing, like the one about twin brother journeymen who committed suicide...when their records featured the exact same ratio of losses to wins.

The book makes a plea for less corruption in boxing, not by strident argument, but just by letting the cheated boxers speak for themselves. Turley has done these hard men an incredible service by bringing them out of the shadows of the boxing world and into the light. You owe it to yourself and to them to read this book. Recommended.

About the Author
Dr. Werner W.K. Hoeger Professor Emeritus in the Department of Kinesiology at Boise State University, and fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. The 2004 recipient of the Presidential Award for Research and Scholarship in the College of Education at Boise State University, Dr. Hoeger continues to research and lecture on exercise physiology, physical fitness, and wellness. In addition to PRINCIPLES AND LABS FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS, Dr. Hoeger has published several Cengage Learning texts, including Fitness and Wellness, Principles and Labs for Fitness and Wellness, Lifetime Physical Fitness and Wellness, Wellness: Guidelines for a Healthy Lifestyle, and Water Aerobics for Fitness and Wellness (with Terry-Ann Spitzer Gibson). Dr. Hoeger is a former luge runner and Winter Olympian, and renowned fitness and wellness innovator. He developed many popular fitness assessment tools in use today, such as the modified sit and reach, total body rotation, shoulder rotation, muscular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and soda pop coordination tests.

Sharon A. Hoeger is Vice President of Fitness & Wellness, Inc. in Boise, Idaho and holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Brigham Young University. Great resource book with a very few minor errors

This is a great book overall and is written by a couple who have been married for over 30 years and have been actively engaged in a healthy lifestyle all that time. I'm very much into health, though through more simple and alternative methods, but this gave me a basic working knowledge of the body and exercise which I found incredibly helpful. I found a handfull of things I would disagree with, mainly concering food and drink... such as the comment that caffinated beverages count towards your water intake... I would vehemently argue that as much proof exists to the contrary ... caffiene is also a diuretic. But I have a good underlying knowlege of food so I was able to just ignore the things I disagreed with. But the mechanics of the body and exercise were wonderful and its a good source of fact and also can be quite inspiring to read. I learned many things I didn't know, such as where you carry your fat makes a difference in your health. Knowing this was written by a couple who practice what they preach really made it even more meaningful.

About the Author
Lawrence S. Cunningham is John A. O'Brien Professor of Theology (Emeritus) at the University of Notre Dame. The author or editor of over 25 books and hundreds of essays and reviews, his books reflect his interest in the history of Christian spirituality, hagiography, the intersection of theology and culture, as well as the relationship of contemplation and action. Professor Cunningham is the recipient of three honorary doctorates and the winner of Notre Dame's Presidential Award for service to academy and church (2002) and the Christus Magister award from the University of Portland in 2011 for distinguished scholarship and teaching. He has served as a visiting lecturer in this country and in Europe, Asia, and South Africa.

A native of England, John J. Reich was trained as a classical archaeologist and did both his undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Manchester. He is an authority on Minoan civilization, pre-Roman Italy, and music. Professor Reich is associated with the Syracuse University study program in Florence, Italy. He lectures frequently in Europe and the United States on history, art, and the humanities and is the author of many scholarly articles and several books, including ITALY BEFORE ROME (1979).

Lois Fichner-Rathus is professor of art in the Department of Art and Art History of The College of New Jersey. She holds a combined undergraduate degree in fine arts and art history, an M.A. from the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art, and a Ph.D. in the History, Theory, and Criticism of Art from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her areas of specialization include contemporary art, feminist art history and criticism, and modern art and architecture, as well as the theory and foundations of art and design. Dr. Fichner-Rathus is also the author of the Cengage Learning textbooks UNDERSTANDING ART and FOUNDATIONS OF ART AND DESIGN. She teaches study-abroad programs in Paris, Rome, Spain, and Cuba and resides in New York.

About the Author
Maria T. Codina Leik, MSN, APRN, BC, FNP-C is the President and Principal Lecturer at National ARNP Services, Inc., her own company. Well-known for her ability to simplify complex concepts for her students, she is a popular speaker and educator. Ms. Leik taught previously in the NP program at Florida International University Graduate School of Nursing. She is Board Certified in two specialties: Family NP and Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP by the AANP and ANCC. Her research findings have been presented at an international HIV conference as well as at nursing conferences. In addition to her two NP certification review books published by Springer Publishing, she is the author of book chapters in two NP textbooks. Ms. Leik is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society.

I thought this review book was excellent!!

I graduated from an Adult Gero Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program on 5/9/14 and took the AANP certification exam on 5/28/14 and passed. I borrowed the Barkley CDs and accompanying review book from a colleague, but listening to someone lecture on a CD just wasn't my cup of tea and I didn't even bother to crack the cover on the Barkley accompanying review book. I thought this review book was excellent!!! It was concise and very comprehensive. I probably got through about 180 of the review questions and read about half of the sections in the book. This book really prepared me for the certification exam! My only regret was not beginning my studying sooner because I felt that if I could have read all of the sections in this review book that it would have helped me do even better on the exam. I'd say about a third of my classmates took the Barkley review course and spent $300-400 to take it. I know we all study and prepare differently, but my suggesstion would be to spend the $35 or $40 for this book and read it through. I don't think you necessarily have to get through all 629 practice test questions, but definitely try to read all the sections. Save your money on the review course and try this first. Again, I thought this book was extremely well written and very comprehensive and truly believe it helped me pass the exam the first time around!

I am a AG-ACNP. I mainly used Barkley's review for acute care part of the Certification exam. I needed additional help for geriatric and professional issues part of the test. On AG-ACNP certification, there are 66 questions on professional issues out of 175 total questions. I used this as review book as the additional preparation. I liked every thing about this review book. First of all it served the purpose I bought this book, additional certification exam preparation. Content is organized very well. Its simple and concise and yet covered all the pertinent information you need on disease conditions as well as professional issues. besides it has 600 practice test questions, few of them are repetitive. Over al a great additional resource for AG-ACNP certification.

I took my board exam today and passed. I had this book and Fitzgerald's book and CDs. I actually did not use this book because I used the other book. But now looking back, this book has a lot of small details that were on the test which Fitzgerald's book does not even cover. I highly recommend this book along with Fitzgerald's.

Good textbook on various Astronomy. Free Starry Nights software so so

As an amateur astronomer of 40 years I bought this used book as a backup book for my observatory for our astronomy club members and my family to use. William J. Kaufmann and Neil F. Comins wrote a very good book. Easy to read and lots of great questions for the astronomy student to tackle. William has a good style that reads well, not super advanced technical that would be very good for a senior high school student or freshman college course.Some math and formulas but not too difficult.

Lots of great pictures. The book keeps your interest and makes you want to read more as you learn each topic.I liked the astronomers toolbox where specific astronomy tools and formulas to compute various equations. Also in the back is a great appendix listing data on the planets and their satellites as well as the nearest and visually brightest stars....a great quick reference.

Some of the various topics discussed ( There are more) are Discovering astronomy, Discovering the night sky, Earthly cycles, Eclipses, Gravitation, Origins of the Sun centered universe,Kepler's and Newton's Laws ( done very well and important!),Light and telescopes,Optics and telescopes, Radio Astronomy, Spectra, Atoms,The Solar System,The evolution of stars and their life cycles, galaxies, quasars, The expanding universe vs. the steady state. This is only a partial selection. The authors wrote much more and covered all the important bases. A great read for the average layman without getting too technical. As I said great for a senior high school student or college student taking astronomy 101.

I checked out the supplied free Starry Nights Discovering The Universe Software 5.0 software. It loaded well on my MS Vista laptop. However I was not impressed with it. Not able to get full screen Messier objects, galaxies, clusters and planets all at one time. I know this is the freebie software and you can get the upgrade Starry Night Pro for $59 on line. I like my Sky 6 Bisque planetarium software much better.

The newer edition is probably better with updates and more info on newer found exoplanets. This older edition at low cost is fine as a backup reference book and a book for students to answer both regular and more advanced astronomy questions. Would of given 5 stars but the free software was just so so...maybe 3 stars tops. Together the package 4 stars. Try to get the later edition at low cost. If not able to, this older edition is fine as much of the material is still good and will not change. Maybe more information needed on new exoplanets. A good backup observatory book and study guide. 4 stars and recommended.

Love this book, very insightful, well introduced for me to understand. I grew a unique interest in Astronomy as it is very down to earth in breaking down the terminology and understanding of the universe and it's planets.
It's not boring, nor is it difficult to understand. The review questions at the end of every chapter help you retain the information more for future exams.

Great Astronomy book, no longer includes CD

This was the assigned text for a college Astronomy class I took. I really enjoy the book. It is well written, easy to read, yet provides a lot of information. It's a rare college text that is actually interesting to just sit down and read and flip through. Great photography and illustrations throughout. I will be keeping this book for personal reference.

One note: Older reviews say the book comes with a CD that includes an electronic copy of the book and/or StarryNight software. The 2014 (10th edition) paperback does not come with any CD but if you look carefully inside the book's Preface you can find a the companion web site which includes some extra slides, flashcards, quizes, star charts, etc. The book also says you can request a download key for StarryNight but I haven't figure out how/where you are supposed to do that yet. An electronic copy of the book is not included anymore and you'd have to buy the premium electronic textbook as far as I can tell.

Very readable

I'm not an Aerospace Engineer, my application was more in in-line with RC use and maybe even kit construction, but I found this book to be quite readable. I would say the best feature was the language use, it never felt like you were being talked down to (like another Aerospace book that I tried to read which will go unmentioned) or overwhelmed with mathematical proofs. Concepts were well explained, and I learned a bit. I found much useful info in this book even though Jet aircraft design was not applicable to me. But given how all of the information was presented the book was at least interesting enough to read in its entirety.

As been pointed out by others, there is not much talk of airfoils and many specifics of piston aircraft.

Incredibly useful

Very useful design information that was missing from my college aerospace education, which focused mostly on analysis. Lots of practical tips and considerations. I particularly like chapter 7 on lofting. The description of conic lofting is very well written and not available in any of my other references. I have used this technique several times since buying the book. Both for modeling existing parts in order to perform finite element anlysis, and for designing new parts for production.
