Make Sure to Get the Errata

The text presents an estimating procedure using production rates. While this is good background to have and is an acceptable methodology, make sure that your instructor also shows you how to use Means. The text does contain numerous errors, so make sure to get the errata sheets from the author. When we asked the author why the corrections have not been updated in the text, the author replied that the publisher said it would cost too much. Somebody needs to tell the publisher to quit selling the book until they fix it!

This book needs to be completely revised.

The original author of this book has been deceased for several revisions. The revisions were not well done and the book is outdated in many areas. Lots of photos which are not worth the space they take up and should be removed. I believe this book survives in tech schools because it has nuggets of well written and well thought out analysis of the estimating process. Without much explanation as to why, the author leans heavily toward the Heavy Civil sector of construction i.e. highways, airports, etc. The software included is also designed for heavy civil. All said, no other author on construction estimating seems to have the grasp of the foundations of estimating as this author. For me, it makes a nice supplemental reference book but I would never adopt it as a textbook.

Must-have reference for anyone trying to deal with bioethics from a Christian perspective

In the early 2000's, Dr. Meilaender served on the president's bioethics panel, and is very respected in his field. This book is worth the full price of admission if one were to only read the preface. He gently points out that this book is for Christians, and that while non-Christians may read along, it is not specifically for them. The best , most concise dealing was with "freedom in Christ" allowing a person to decide not to proceed. This has heavy implications in several areas of life, that would beg for wrestling with God's sovereignty versus one's own volition (I am thinking reproductive issues here, but you can fill in your own). I have several Bioethics books, but this is by far the most useful. I didn't agree with everything I read, but was forced to think, which I see as a pro, No cons for this book.

Fabulous Flintlocks

It is hard to imagine how a serious collector of antique British Military firearms could bear to be without this invaluable publication. Ditto for those others with any interest in the history of this subject and period.
Blackmore manages to produce a narrative that is both engaging and informative.
There is plenty of background on the development of the British Military Ordnance system combined with full data on individual weapons , their evolution and how they may be identified.
The work is copiously illustrated with photographs of original weapons held by the Armouries of The Tower of London and includes appendices which identify barrel,lock and stock marks.
The late Mr Blackmore spent 10 years on his researches and his dedication has resulted in the production of a book which has become a standard and invaluable reference point.
Although now out of print, the work merits any inconvenience which the reader may have to suffer to obtain a second hand copy.

Great For Newbies

I have lots of SharePoint experience, but had never done much with branding (html, css). This book was recommended to me by a programmer when I was assigned a branding project at work. I love this book, it gave me the base knowledge to get started on the project and I have used it extensively. I highly recommend this book, especially if you are migrating to 2013 and are new to customizing SP.

An amazing book on SharePoint branding and UI design

Not sure where to being with this review other than to say that this is an amazing book! Full color images really drive home what you are doing and, I think, makes it much easier to understand. It is one thing for a book to say doing X will give you Red text but then to see the actual results in red text makes it much better.

The only bad thing I would have to say about this book is the layout, but I feel that is more because I am a developer rather than a UI person. Whenever I show it to my artist type friends they all love it and really the book is more for their types than mine :)

Great book for all experience levels

I'm a hands on director of IT for a medium sized business. I tend to want to understand a system and my options before relying on others especially consultants. I found the content of this book to be at the perfect level. For the most part, with this book alone, you could successfully stand up a pilot sharepoint environment with no problem. The branding tips were better than any other reference especially if you plan to use CSS.

About the Author

Frederic (Ric) H. Martini received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in comparative and functional anatomy for work on the pathophysiology of stress. He is currently an affiliated faculty member of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Dr. Martini is a President Emeritus of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) after serving as President-elect, President, and Past-president over 2004-2007. He was a member of the HAPS committee that established the course curriculum guidelines for A&P. He is the lead author of nine undergraduate texts on anatomy and physiology or anatomy, all published by Pearson.

William C. Ober received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University and his M.D. from the University of Virginia. While in medical school, he also studied in the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. After graduation, Dr. Ober completed a residency in Family Practice and later was on the faculty at the University of Virginia in the Department of Family Medicine. He is currently an Affiliate Professor of Biology at Washington and Lee University. Dr. Ober has illustrated every Martini book in every edition.

Edwin F. Bartholomew received his undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and his M.S. from the University of Hawaii. Mr. Bartholomew has taught anatomy and physiology and a wide variety of other science courses (from botany to zoology) at both the secondary and undergraduate levels at historic Lahainaluna High School, the oldest high school west of the Rockies, and Maui Community College. Mr. Bartholomew is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the National Association of Biology Teachers, the National Science Teachers Association, the Hawaii Science Teachers Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Working with Dr. Martini, he has coauthored five undergraduate texts on anatomy and physiology, all published by Pearson.�

Judi L. Nath is a biology professor at Lourdes College, where she teaches anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, medical terminology, and pharmacology.� She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Bowling Green State University and her Ph.D. from the University of Toledo. She is a multiple recipient of the Faculty Excellence Award, granted by Lourdes College to recognize her effective teaching, scholarship, and community service. She is active in many professional organizations, notably the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society (HAPS), where she has served several terms on the board of directors.� Working with Dr. Martini, she has coauthored four undergraduate texts on anatomy and physiology, all published by Pearson.�

Awesome book.

It was awesome how it was packaged in a box and it had air bags to protect it. What was even more awesome was the fact that it came in a day earlier than it was projected to arrive.
It's a really good book as a supplementary resource. I'm a visual learner, and the diagrams are wonderfully made. And gosh, the way it's structured - it's so organized.
Sure, there's lots of content to learn, but it takes a bit of perseverance, and this book sure helps a lot.

A young girl's painful first love and the unresolved feelings of the relationship are the crux of this novel, which moves from West Sussex in 1980 to Alloa, Scotland and New York. When Claire Barclay's widowed mother meets and marries the kind, gentle Leo Harrison, fifteen years her senior, mother and daughter move to Leo's rambling home in Scotland, a place Claire grows to love. Although she is never accepted by her jealous step-siblings, Charity and Marcus, Claire basks in Leo's generous affection, the only flaw in her world the abrupt and inexplicable ending to her close friendship (on the cusp of romance) with Jonas Fairweather, whose father works on Leo's estate.

Claire learns to put heartbreak behind, albeit unresolved, until her mixed emotions resurface years later after her mother's unexpected death and Leo's failing health. Suddenly Claire is back in Scotland with her husband and small daughter, faced with a confusing set of circumstances and a scheme that may threaten Leo's future security. Until old issues are put to rest and new troubles confronted, Claire's peace of mind remains elusive. At the heart of the novel is the unresolved breakup between Claire and Jonas, made more difficult by the uncertainty of Leo's future, the elderly man caught between his step daughter and his adult children, who have ideas of their own.

This novel might have more impact were the characters and their conflicts less superficial and formulaic. But it is hard to credit a young woman's loss of first love and the rancor still carried towards her by Marcus and Charity, let alone Fairweather's prominence in the story. The plot remains mired in petty, if expensive grievances. Pilcher does capture Claire's idyllic childhood in Scotland and writes with flair of the details of place. Yet the conflict at the heart of the story is less than satisfactory, the characters not quite memorable. Luan Gaines/2010.

Engrossing, but not as good as his earlier books

I'm a fan of Robin Pilcher and couldn't wait to get his latest book. I was put off at first by the way he shifts back and forth to various years, and found I had to keep checking back to see what year I was reading about. Did he think the plot wouldn't stand if he wrote chronologically? I also got impatient in the middle and cheated to see the ending. And then I got engrossed again and read every word.

I don't want to give away the plot, so let me say that what I especially liked about this book is that it is a man writing about relationships, not just romantic ones, but family and more. However, he also brings in subjects most female authors don't, such as business and finance, so his plots gets involved and interesting. In the end I found the plot and the characters believable.

If you are a Pilcher fan, either of Robin or his mother, do buy this book! But if you are just being introduced to this author, I recommend that you start with one of his earlier books.

Note that this book is being simultaneously published in the UK under a different title. So don't buy another book of Pilcher's with the characters Claire, Violet, Leo, Jonas, Art.
