Review
“The issuing of The Puritan Origins of the American Self, with a fascinating new preface by Sacvan Bercovitch, is an occasion for celebration. A landmark contribution to American studies, the book is also a model, still vital and generative after many years, for any attempt to analyze the ideological dream-life upon which nations are founded. Bercovitch has an uncanny ability to be at once knowing and innocent, a sophisticated master of the textual archive and a wide-eyed stranger, like Kafka’s Max Rossmann, amazed by what he is witnessing on the shores of the New World. A major and enduring achievement.”—Stephen Greenblatt, Cogan University Professor of the Humanities, Harvard University (Stephen Greenblatt)

“The Puritan Origins of the American Self is a classic text for American studies, and the splendid newpreface makes it available for new generations. Known for its wide learning, clear and compelling prose, and above all for the strength of its twin arguments about the continuity of national culture and the flexible shape of American ideology, Bercovitch's book continues to be essential reading.”—Michael Warner, Seymour H. Knox Professor of English, Yale University (Michael Warner)

undefined (Werner Sollors)

“Sacvan Bercovitch’s insights about the formative power of the Puritan imagination remain as fresh and relevant in the post-9/11 world as they were in 1975, when he shaped a field of study. No one better understands than Bercovitch both the imaginative hold of the nation form and its intrinsic instability in a global network of allegiances and affiliations “—Priscilla Wald, Professor of English, Duke University (Priscilla Wald)

A Seminal, Challenging Analysis of Puritan Thought and its Importance in the Shaping of American Identity
By Roger D. Launius
Sacvan Bercovitch, Powell M. Cabot Professor of American Literature at Harvard University, presents in this important book an analysis of what he refers to as the "rhetoric of American identity" through the "sources of our obsessive concern with the meaning of America" (p. ix). He uses one central case study to explore this issue, "Nehemias Americanus," Cotton Mather's biography of John Winthrop, first published in 1702. In Winthrop Mather discovered not only "a reliable model of christic identity" (p. 24) but also the "idea of the exemplary American" (p. 35). This is especially because of Winthrop's sense of progress, wherein a "redemptive history" merged personal worth with national mission. Puritans, in Bercovitch's vision, saw themselves as "American Israelites, the sole reliable exegetes of a new, last book of scripture" (p. 113). He argues that Cotton Mather, perhaps the epitome of the Puritan thinker, assigned America the status of a "microcosm of the worldwide work of redemption, and macrocosm of the redemptive work underway in each of its chosen people" (p. 134). This blending of personal story--essentially a spiritual biography--with a national prophecy and mission has been a persistent theme in American history and was first apparent in the writings of the early American Puritans.

Bercovitch goes a step further with his analysis, however, by noting that this Puritan approach to personal/national identity provided a handy but complex structure for later generations to think of their place in the world. The result was a belief in human perfectibility and a strong utopian impulse in American intellectual thought and political tradition. From Thomas Jefferson's stirring statement in the Declaration of Independence that people must work to ensure that all receive their unalienable rights of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," to the sense of destiny in recent America, the quest for a better world has been a major subtext of every aspect of American life. As Bercovitch shows, this strain of thought offers a "celebration of the representative self as America, and of the American self as the embodiment of a prophetic universal design" (p. 136).

"The Puritan Origins of the American Self" is a difficult reading experience. It uses the language of hermeneutics in its analysis and routinely employs such jargon as "auto-American-autobiography." More importantly, some may appropriately conclude that Bercovitch overstates his case, questioning if the Puritan mindset permeated American character to the degree he claims. Even so, this is required reading for students of early American history. It offers an important interpretation of the intellectual legacy of Puritan thought on the United States.

Brilliant and Indispensable
By A Customer
This is the single most important study of the formation of "America"--its culture, history and literature. Professor Bercovitch's brilliant analysis of these Puritan texts should be essential reading to anyone even remotely interested in undertanding the often bizarre nature of American society. Working with original Puritan chronicles, diaries and other texts, Bercovitch shows that so much of what we take for granted in this culture has a distinctly Puritan origin. Read this book, and you will never view any aspect of this country the same way again.

Excellent but claims too much
By Joseph M. Hennessey
Bercovitch proves his case that the Boston Puritans set the tone for the American mind, especially its belief that it had a special mission (from God) to create a 'city on a hill' which would redeem the rest of the world, especially decadent Europe. One can hear the same rhetoric from Presidents Kennedy, Reagan and GW Bush. Hence the name 'New' England, to distinguish the colony from bad 'olde' England. Bercovitch shows that Cotton Mather was the first to use the word "America" like we do, as a distinct place populated by people similar but different from Europe. Thus, as early as the 1600's, the colonists were thinking of themselves as Americans, and the split in identity with England would grow only wider, culminating in the inevitable revolution.

The reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that Bercovitch claims that Cotton Mather's ideology stretched all the way to RW Emerson. While there may be some external similarities in both stressing the uniqueness of America, the differences between the two are much more prominent. Succinctly, Emerson stood against virtually everything Mather stood for, staunchly denying Mather's Calvinist Christianity, veering past Unitarianism into agnostic pantheism. In the end, Emerson's deconstruction of biblical religion has contributed to the devastation of the 'nation' that Mather knew, one based on Biblical ethics.

A Must-Have Book for Carpenters Fans!
By Irene Economou
To a diehard Carpenters' fan there is no such thing as too much information. After all, there just might be some new tidbit about a song or lyric you weren't aware of before, or you might learn about some unusual event or history associated with a particular song. The fascination with the Carpenters is never over.

Enter Rick Henry with his latest book, "Expanded Edition: The Carpenters Online Interviews." Like his first edition, the second edition also features individuals that provided lyrics and/or songs to the Carpenters. One of the new interviews is with Terry Draper, who was a member of the group, Klaatu, and co-authored "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft." Did you know that it was Tony Peluso, guitarist for the Carpenters, who suggested this song to Karen and Richard? In the Danny Ironstone interview you learn about the history and inspiration behind the song "Prime Time Love." How did Karen make this song more her own? I liked the pure honesty in what both musicians had to say about their songs and how they felt knowing their songs were going to be repurposed in the Carpenters' signature style.

One of my favorite interviews was what actually turned into a four-part essay by Palma Pascale, the author of "Love Me for What I Am." Palma gives us a marvelous, detailed scenario of how hard it really is to be a lyricist in this industry and that nothing is ever a sure-thing. This interview was in the first edition of Rick's book, but I enjoyed it even more reading it again. What is new is the tribute written by Tim San Paolo, a close friend and associate to Palma. She was such a down-to-earth person.

I also enjoyed getting to learn more about Lucy Drive, the actress, who portrayed Karen Carpenter in the documentary film, "The Last Hours of Karen Carpenter," which aired in August 2014.

Then we get to a marvelous section of the book, the section dedicated to Karen's solo album: "Karen Carpenter: Behind the Scenes of the New York Solo Sessions." It is now over 30 years since Karen Carpenter passed away (February 4, 1983), yet we are still itching to know more about this fascinating songstress. There are six interviews with musicians /technicians involved with Karen's project. I was completely immersed in what each individual had to say. You cannot read interviews like this anywhere else! This edition expanded the interviews with well-known drummer, Liberty DeVitto, and multi-talented Russell Javors. Two of Russell's songs ended up on Karen's solo album. These are the country-tinged "All Because of You" and the new-wave rocker "Still in Love with You." Russell also composed the arrangement for the latter. Additionally, he wrote "Truly You," which is one of the nine, unreleased Karen solo songs.

The third section of the book, entitled, "From the Perspective of the Fans," shares insights from several fans. It's always interesting to learn more about fellow Carpenters fans and how they were impacted by Karen's talent. Each story is unique. Finally, the book ends with an interview with Rick Henry. We get to learn more about him, how the concept for the original "The Carpenters Online Interviews" book came about, and what motivated Rick to do this second edition.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will read it more than once. It also is attractively designed and makes a beautiful coffee-table book to share with visitors. Besides Carpenters fans, if you know someone who wants to learn more about the history behind some of the Carpenters songs and Karen's solo experience via interviews, this is definitely the right book to read!

Look Homeward, Angel, by Thomas Wolfe

The spectacular, history-making first novel about a young man’s coming of age by literary legend Thomas Wolfe, first published in 1929 and long considered a classic of twentieth century literature.

A legendary author on par with William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor, Thomas Wolfe published Look Homeward, Angel, his first novel, about a young man’s burning desire to leave his small town and tumultuous family in search of a better life, in 1929. It gave the world proof of his genius and launched a powerful legacy.

The novel follows the trajectory of Eugene Gant, a brilliant and restless young man whose wanderlust and passion shape his adolescent years in rural North Carolina. Wolfe said that Look Homeward, Angel is “a book made out of my life,” and his largely autobiographical story about the quest for a greater intellectual life has resonated with and influenced generations of readers, including some of today’s most important novelists. Rich with lyrical prose and vivid characterizations, this twentieth-century American classic will capture the hearts and imaginations of every reader.

Review
“In 1949, when I was sixteen, I stumbled on Thomas Wolfe, who died at thirty-eight in 1938, and who made numerous adolescents aside from me devotees of literature for life. In Wolfe, everything was heroically outsized, whether it was the voracious appetite for experience of Eugene Gant, the hero of his first two novels, or of George Webber, the hero of his last two. The hero's loneliness, his egocentrism, his sprawling consciousness gave rise to a tone of elegiac lyricism that was endlessly sustained by the raw yearning for an epic existence—for an epicAmerican existence. And, in those postwar years, what imaginative young reader didn't yearn for that?” (Philip Roth)

"Language as rich and ambitious and intensely American as any of our novelists has ever accomplished." -- Charles Frazier, author of Cold Mountain and Thirteen Moons

"Look Homeward, Angel is one of the most important novels of my life. . . . It's a wonderful story for any young person burning with literary ambition, but it also speaks to the longings of our whole lives; I'm still moved by Wolfe's ability to convey the human appetite for understanding and experience." -- Elizabeth Kostova, author of The Historian

"Wolfe made it possible to believe that the stuff of life, with all its awe and mystery and magic, could by some strange alchemy be transmuted to the page." -- William Gay, author of The Long Home

"As so many other American boys had before and have since, I discovered a version of myself in Look Homeward, Angel, and I became intoxicated with the elevated, poetic prose." -- Robert Morgan, author of Gap Creek

From the Publisher
Look Homeward, Angel is an elaborate and moving coming-of-age story about Eugene Gant, a restless and energetic character whose passion to experience life takes him from his small, rural hometown in North Carolina to Harvard University and the city of Boston. The novel's pattern is artfully simple -- a small town, a large family, high school and college -- yet the characters are monumental in their graphic individuality and personality.

Through his rich, ornate prose, Wolfe evokes the extraordinarily vivid family of the Gants, and with equal detail, the remarkable peculiarities of small-town life and the pain and upheaval of a boy who must leave both. A classic work of American literature, Look Homeward, Angel is a passionate, stirring, and unforgettable novel.

About the Author

epic autobiographical novel is of course an American classic that has influenced other great free thinking American writers
By Buenvino
This massive, epic autobiographical novel is of course an American classic that has influenced other great free thinking American writers. But about 100 years since its publication, the trials and tribulations of Wolfe's tough childhood in Asheville, NC, often tend to meander and verge on the surreal, making this a real challenge for less patient or discerning readers.

It therefore comes as no surprise that a film is about to be released (2016) about Wolfe's relationship with the great publishing editor who tackled one of Wolfe's later offerings, a million words long!.

Most of Look Homeward, Angel is hugely entertaining as Wolfe brings his extended family and the whole of 1900s Asheville to glorious life, with especial attention to warts and all. No wonder that, after the books publication, he could not return to the town for years. As his genius and thirst for knowledge developed - including an insatiable need for books, he literally outgrew (6' 6") all around him, having to overcome crippling shyness and humilation - his time at UNC in Chapel Hill was also a rite of passage.

This is the first book I have read anything on Kindle and I had the privilege of reading it in Asheville and Chapel Hill. Mastering Kindle's note taking or bookmark systems takes time, but in the end they worked well. It's great access gems from the tome whenever I want.

Fate Drops a Plum into the Palm of his Hand!
By Charles Scott
The community of Altamont, North Carolina which I found in a worn, dog-eared, but trusty 2004 edition Rand McNally Road Atlas might not be the same one described in the novel Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe, but then again...the town I located is in the vicinity of four nearby or connected counties: Avery, Burke, Caldwell, and Mitchell. It is situated in an area surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains which traverse toward the northeast into the state of Virginia, and the Appalachian and Iron Mountains angled toward the northwest from the eastern-most part of Tennessee, south of Johnson City. The unassuming town is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway between Asheville and Boone, North Carolina. The Pisgah National Forest lies to the southwest. There are numerous mountain peaks, lakes, state parks, and recreational areas throughout the wilderness region. At higher elevations, the area looks like an excellent choice for a scenic drive, a fine vacation destination, a good place to go to escape the sweltering summer heat in Georgia and South Carolina, and possibly find a retirement home in a peaceful, quiet, and natural setting. Out of the way, you might not have the social amenities such as huge shopping malls, marquee concert hall entertainment, the international cuisine often associated with fine dining, or major-league professional sporting venues found in the more developed population centers such as Winston-Salem-Greensboro, Raleigh-Durham, or Charlotte, but then you probably wouldn't have the hustle-bustle, traffic, and big-time crime either. Good jobs? Moving to a remote mountain town might not be the wisest upwardly mobile career decision you could make--if you are Harvard-educated corporate-business executive material. But you never know, someone might come up with a miracle cure for brain cancer, and a prominent community such as Altamont focused on the future might become the next world-renowned center for break-through medical research. A pharmaceutical company's “dream come true.”
If you had been living at the turn of the twentieth century, when the spiced-up, earthy novel, written in 1929, took place you might have found yourself in or driving by the "Dixieland Boarding House," of which the author fondly reminisces and where his family of amazing tobacco-smoking, whiskey-sipping, God-fearing characters lived for the greater portion of their highly dramatic soap opera charged lives. Even more, you read the novel and you get a condensed course in the Classics and Antiquity. It is a primer of primitive cultures and a touchstone of ancient traditions. Oliver Gant, a stone-cutter tradesman, the patriarch of the family has a distinct flair for the dramatic. He is a well-practiced, accomplished oratory oracle of the sublime and infinite universe. In his own way, he seeks the affirmation and approval of the almighty God and Protector of his family and home. His blessed, frugal and sensible wife, Eliza, holds the family together, in my opinion. Her business savvy and making timely, smart real estate investments keeps them from starvation and out of the poor-house. His youngest son, Eugene carries on the impromptu speech-making tradition and puts it all down in historical, at times poetic, written chronicle form. Eventually, he goes on to college and becomes a man of letters. Like the rest of the family, he likes to travel, but tends to wander, stray, and get lost along the way. When war looms on the horizon for the nation, the family philosophy of protecting individual freedom and the inalienable rights of all Americans actively involves them in the effort. Eugene goes to the shipyards in Virginia to help supply Navy vessels with arms and munitions. His brother Luke joins the Navy as a seaman. In general, they are a family of metaphysical voyagers, ever searching for something over the horizon, they know not what or why. Inevitably, Eugene has to "look away" from Dixieland. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the novel is his story. In a sentimental way, it reminds me of the charming family film, "Spencer's Mountain." And it reminds me a little of Carson McCuller's novel, "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter." So you get a little of the bitter with the sweet.

Better than Faulkner
By Savoir Faire
I loved the poetic language, “by the wind grieved,” and so forth. I also enjoyed the local color and the characters, especially old Gant, which turn out to be autobiographical. There seem to be two novels at war here and, although I liked them both, the result is a little chaotic.

The background novel is realistic, observational, and sardonic. Wolfe is a wry observer of human nature, and this novel would have been fine (but dull) on its own. Grafted onto this is the exultant “local boy makes good” story of Eugene, full of life and curiosity, and on his way to great things.

The book cries out for an editor, so I was amused when the paperback arrived including an apologia from said editor. He might also have removed some of the longer dull spots. There seems to be a special category for Southern writers, with lower standards. I have complained about Faulkner elsewhere. Wolfe is much more readable.

A Draw For Arsenal
By sillybilly312
Somewhat disappointing. Many of the chapters deal with the team's recent history. I was hoping for a better mix of past and present. This book is for hardcore fans only.

Finally, the Opus on eBook.
By Victoria
I love reading but not physical books. Beautifully presented history (a mixture of past and present with a more focus on the latter). The real Opus is insanely expensive, so get the hard copy while you can have the same in your ipad?
