Six Suites JS Bach -for Horn
By PF
Can't really critique the music...it is classic. We purchased this book for our daughter who is performing a solo in front of judges in school. The kids are penalized if the music is supposed to have an accompanist and they don't play with one. And usually, if you find a French Horn solo piece sans accompanist, it is very difficult. This book offers a variety of music with varying difficulty and does not require an accompanist. I believe it is music she will be able to use offten in the years to come.

Bach `Cello suites arranged for horn by Wendell Hoss
By Alan Grant
Having returned to playing the horn after a number of years off it is good to play these old friends.
Wendell has taken into consideration the range and playing characteristics of the horn in this arrangement, so that the suites are a true joy to practice and perform.
Though never easy they are a staple of my musical day.

From Publishers Weekly
Karpov, the Russian who gained the title of world chess champion after American Bobby Fisher relinquished it in 1975, then 10 years later lost the crown to his fellow countryman Gary Kasparov, proves that chess is not a game. It is war, with psychological strategy as important as the moves made on the board: Karpov maintains that an expert does not play against the pieces, but against his opponent, and is guided by principles intrinsic to the game, "the internal laws by which the game lives." He studied with former champion Mikhail Botvinnick. Furiously competitive, Karpov regrets most that he never played Fisher, whom he admires, and is not at all gracious about his toughest opponents, Victor Korchnoi and Kasparov, claiming that the latter did not win, but that he himself lost. The former champion, who continues to play, ends on an upbeat note: "Now I am faced with a new ascent." Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Karpov (b. 1951) was the world chess champion between 1975 and 1985. Garry Kasparov, the current champion, dethroned him, and the two ideologically opposed Russians have had a bitter rivalry ever since. This book may be Karpov's way of responding to Kasparov's autobiography Unlimited Challenge ( LJ 11/1/90). The final 38 pages are devoted exclusively to describing their extensive competitions and disagreements. Karpov also offers insightful commentary on numerous other chess legends such as his long-standing challenger Victor Korchnai and American Bobby Fischer, whom he was scheduled to play in a heralded match that never took place. Recommended for libraries with large chess collections.

There goes the romance of chess.
By sergei kochkin
I happened to get a signed leather-bound first edition of this little work. If anything this book and the Spassky-Fisher work by Richard Roberts not to mention the most recent movie Pawn Sacrifice destroyed any romance I had for the world chess championship achievement. It does not sound like Karpov was having fun, but then who can have fun under the old Soviet system with petty communist bureaucrats controlling every move off the chessboard? In addition the mental strain of chess at this lofty level seems to also coincide with mental instability. Most of the book is complaining about the psychological even occult (parapsychology!) games grandmasters play. I found it all annoying to hear his bitching about Korchnoi and Kasparov. I was more intrigued with his perceptions of Fischer, which were complimentary. The tragedy of course is Karpov and Fischer never got to play for the world title because of Fischer's unreasonable demands, thus Karpov won by default (an empty achievement) and never realized his dream of ascending to the next chess level or at least finding out where he stood next to perhaps the greatest player in history (though I suspect that really was Paul Morphy). He could have been more generous in this memoir by publishing his top 25 games....and certainly none of his tens of thousands of draws. Never-the-less this memoir offers an intriguing peek into the lofty world of the super-minds of chess. Fortunately my chess computer does not play these dysfunctional games. It just plays excellent chess.

Near Masterpiece
By Samuel Leyva
The first half of this book is startlingly well written, literary, and even sometimes quite humorous, as when Karpov recounts the story about his mother checking up on him after he had been forbidden to think about chess. As the book nears the present, however, Karpov loses the thread of his own story and begins to wander (some would put it stronger than that) in his analysis of Kasparov and their bitter rivalry. One wishes, therefore, that Karpov had waited til he was well into his 50's before attempting the sort thing he tries here; because his childhood is recalled with vivid insight and the point of view that emerges is astonishing: he just happened to find himself World Champion one day! On the other hand, I can easily imagine chess players not liking this book at all since it has no chess games in it; but that really doesn't matter if one is fascinated by the subject (as I am). I only mention the fact to warn people who might be expecting something other than what they will find here: an autobiography. That said, this is a very good book from the former World Champion which ends with him hopefully predicting his future re-claiming of the world title (the book came out in 1990). You can read that last part any way you like or ignore it, but there it is: Karpov is a romantic who had to somehow make his way through the demi-human universe of Soviet Chess. A number of fans will undoubtedly disagree with this assessment, but one can tell when someone is lying about the unacceptable deeds of their past: Karpov's memoir is, therefore, touching at times, as his telling of the events surrounding the aborted match with Fischer amply demonstrates.... I recomend this book to anyone who has a heart, and, wants to know more about the history of the royal game in our times.

A wonderful insight
By Peter June
In his autobiography Karpov details everything from his early childhood to his rivalries with Korchnoi and Kasparov. The fluency of the book, however, is flawed and there is a virtual chasm between his childhood and rest-of-life. That said, I think this is one of the best autobiographies I've ever read. Karpov tells about his spiritual approach to the game, his gentle and kind personality, and most importantly, his match with Korchnoi.
To be honest, I think that the description of the match with Korchnoi (actually all their matches) is one of the best passages in a book I've read yet. The absolutely intense labor, momentum of the match, and conspiracies surrounding all of his games are fascinating and intriguing. If you are going to buy a book on Karpov or any autobiography, but this one.

The New York Nobody Knows: Walking 6,000 Miles in the City, by William B. Helmreich

As a child growing up in Manhattan, William Helmreich played a game with his father called "Last Stop." They would pick a subway line, ride it to its final destination, and explore the neighborhood. Decades later, his love for exploring the city is as strong as ever.

Putting his feet to the test, he decided that the only way to truly understand New York was to walk virtually every block of all five boroughs--an astonishing 6,000 miles. His journey took him to every corner of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Helmreich spoke with hundreds of New Yorkers from every part of the globe and all walks of life. He finds that to be a New Yorker is to struggle to understand the place and to make a life that is as highly local as it is dynamically cosmopolitan.

Truly unforgettable, The New York Nobody Knows will forever change how you view the world's greatest city.

From Publishers Weekly
From 2008 to 2012, City College of New York sociologist Helmreich systematically walked almost every street in the city, including those in the four outer boroughs—the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Helmreich (What Was I Thinking?) traverses the wide world located in a city whose population appears to come from every nation on the planet. His gaze is wide—sometimes doing ethnography, sometimes taking a nostalgic look at places he lived—and he engages with issues such as immigration, gentrification, and ethnic identity. The result comes close to providing an everything you wanted to know, but didn't know who to ask, as the author visits parks, projects, schools, restaurants, and stores, observing the city's active life (parades, street musicians, chess players) and still life (shop signs, street art, community gardens, building facades). Along the way, Helmreich chats with sundry people as well as the city's last four mayors. Rigorous scholarly and journalistic research underpins his work. Though the narrative meanders, this is appropriate in a book that takes readers through the balkanized collection of towns that constitute New York City. The book's maps (one of the entire city, and one for each borough) and a useful neighborhood glossary make the journey yet more vivid. 30 halftones, 6 maps. (Nov.)

Review
Winner of the 2015 GANYC Award for Outstanding Achievement in Book Writing, The Guides Association of New York City

Honorable Mention for the 2013 PROSE Award in Sociology & Social Work, Association of American Publishers

"The delight is definitely in the details in William B. Helmreich's The New York Nobody Knows: Walking 6,000 Miles in the City. Professor Helmreich, a sociologist at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, invites readers on a romp through largely unexplored neighborhoods that is as entertaining as it is enlightening."--Sam Roberts, New York Times

"Helmreich set himself a formidable task: he walked every block in New York City over a four-year period, producing what he calls an 'ethnographic study' comprised of vignettes based on interviews with hundreds of residents on sidewalks, streets, and even in private homes. The result: a magisterial work that examines how people live in this large, complex, and evolving urban landscape. . . . This is a landmark achievement, for those wanting to dig deeper than The Encyclopedia of New York City, edited by Kenneth T. Jackson. Highly recommended to sociologists, urban demographers, New York historians, and all walking enthusiasts in the city."--Richard Drezen, Library Journal starred review

"An excellent introduction to one of the most ethnically diverse and vibrant cities in the world, and a model of urban sociology."--Christian Century

"The author exudes great love and admiration for his hometown on every page, and this collection of anecdotes brings New York to life with unprecedented humanity and detail. This book is pure joy; even the most dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker will learn something new about this vibrant city."--Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"To know a man, you have to walk a mile in his shoes. To truly know New York, you may have to walk 6,000. Or, you can just read Helmreich's account of visiting every inch of the city. His journey from the Bronx to Staten Island allowed him to mingle with plenty of fellow flâneurs, like Mayors Bloomberg and Ed Koch."--New York Observer

"[The book] recognises the fact that the everyday experience of the city--the people you meet, the odd things that happen--are important. . . . For me, the best bits are Helmreich's detailed descriptions of chance encounters. . . . He gives a powerful depiction of the numbing dullness of some people's jobs, from the security guard in the museum to the man waving a flag outside a garage. These are described with tenderness and not a little wry humour."--Flora Samuel, Times Higher Education

"Fascinating."--Michael Potemra, National Review

"An uncommon portrait of the city in 2013: a look at its diverse neighborhoods and the urban issues--like immigration, community, use of public space and gentrification--that run through all of them. The book is not a guidebook, but a very accessible sociological study, full of color and anecdote."--Sandee Brawarsky, Jewish Week

"By necessity, given the size of the city, Helmreich calls his book no more than a much-needed 'introductory work' to the diversity of New York City. His method is, in some ways, a throw back to a much earlier form of social criticism, when walking was curiously in vogue for the self-styled intellectuals and elites of 19th century Europe. Think of Charles Dickens's night walks through London or the well-dressed flâneurs of Paris. And it's one that anyone can learn from. 'If I accomplish anything besides sociology,' Helmreich says, 'it's to encourage people to walk through what I call the greatest museum in the world.'"--Stephanie Garlock, The Atlantic

"The New York Nobody Knows is not a walking tour or a mere list of city highlights. The book is a 450-page sociological examination of New York through the eyes of a keen observer. It is segmented into parts on the city's ethnic composition, gentrification, environs and what the future may hold for America's melting pot. And yes, there's a section on what makes New York fun, too. . . . The New York Nobody Knows is gratifyingly deep with analysis on the city's history and demographics while also reading like a survival guide at times."--Colin Devries, Daily News

"[E]xcellent. . . . [T]he voices and stories of the people [Helmreich] encounters are what make this book so memorable. . . . It's refreshing to read a book that celebrates so unreservedly the ethnic diversity of a city and entirely fitting that it should be about a metropolis that has always been defined by its cosmopolitan culture."--PD Smith, The Guardian

"It's a story of Helmreich's encounters with hundreds of New Yorkers from every walk of life and from every part of the globe, including Mayors Ed Koch, David Dinkins, Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg. His observations--all touching on various aspects of the multifarious lives of the estimated 8.3 million people wgi live, work, survive and thrive in the world's greatest metropolitan city--are poignant and insightful, heartfelt and charming."--Amsterdam News

"In the genre of 'books tallying mammoth heroic self-imposed feats' comes William B. Helmreich's engaging account of how he logged 6,000 miles on foot through all the boroughs of NYC, accumulating many insights into the eternal, multi-ethnic metropolis."--Barnes and Noble Review

"If Walt Whitman contained 'multitudes' within himself, this fine book contains multitudes more--the beating, dynamic heart of New York is here."--City-litcafe

"Helmreich's shoe leather was worth it; the book is a thorough study."--Grace Lichtenstein, PopMatters

"[E]ngaging . . . easily-read and nicely-paced."--Tommy Barker, Irish Examiner

"This exploration of New York City is built from the souvenirs of a formidable journey. Sociologist Helmreich presents the city as a richly diverse place whose residents are eager to share insights and opinions. At its best, the volume reflects the author's willingness to listen, to observe, and to be amazed. . . . [T]his is an original study, and one that will inspire others to set out to walk, and talk, their way across the city."--Choice

"The New York Nobody Knows really does (socially) traverse the New York nobody knows; while in so doing, invariably opening a menagerie of colourful doors I suspect most people didn't even know existed. Myself wholeheartedly included."--David Marx, davidmarx.co.uk

"Helmreich's book is clearly a labor of love for both the city as a collective project and the city of individual human lives and stories."--Michael Minn, Geographical Reviews

"The New York Nobody Knows exemplifies the richness that the ethnographic approach affords. . . . It must be read with a flexible mind-set, but once read that way, can be revisited and mined for its rich data. Helmreich added to the knowledge base typically gleaned from categorical analysis, and overcame many of the blind spots usually present in such research. Helmreich's work inspires social scientists to lace-them-up and do it elsewhere."--David B. Broad, Ph.D., International Social Science Review

From the Back Cover

"A modern-day flaneur, ethnographer William Helmreich moves engagingly through the streets and neighborhoods of New York, making pithy and substantive observations that place the everyday lives of the city's diverse peoples in a peculiarly revealing light. The New York Nobody Knows is a brilliant representation of everyday lives of New Yorkers, and as such--what Baudelaire did for Paris, Helmreich's work promises for New York."--Elijah Anderson, author of The Cosmopolitan Canopy: Race and Civility in Everyday Life

"Helmreich's original and incredible book shows what every nook and cranny of this city looks like from the inside. I have never seen a work that amasses so many observations from so many scenes and deploys them with such elegance. It is a monumental and inspiring achievement."--Mitchell Duneier, author of Sidewalk

"William Helmreich has walked everywhere and read everything pertinent on New York, and has many astute observations about both the essential spirit of the Big Apple and its rapid changes. Recommended to all lovers of this particular city, and cities in general."--Phillip Lopate, author of Waterfront: A Walk around Manhattan

"The book offers an intriguing journey through the jagged patchwork of New York neighborhoods. Helmreich is a native son who has never lost his love for the city, its unusual characters, and its capacity to absorb change."--Sharon Zukin, author of Naked City: The Death and Life of Authentic Urban Places

"Original and important, The New York Nobody Knows presents a picture of the inner life of the city, bit by delightful bit, as a complete whole. The book is enchanting in a wonderfully old-fashioned way."--Peter Moskos, author of Cop in the Hood: My Year Policing Baltimore's Eastern District

"In a clear storytelling manner, Helmreich makes the case that New York is a vibrant, complex, and diverse municipality grappling with a range of social conditions and different forms of social change, all of which are affecting America's major cities. I know of no other work comparable in scope."--Alford A. Young Jr., author of The Minds of Marginalized Black Men: Making Sense of Mobility, Opportunity, and Future Life Chances

Wonderful read
By J. Spence
After seeing William's interview on the news, figured I'd try this out. This is one of those easy-to-read page turners for me. A great spare-time read to have on the Kindle. Nothing complicated, it's like sitting, listening to this guy tell his story, which is nice sometimes to have a no-thrills read. His adventures in New York are inspiring and I can definitely relate to many of his encounters myself living in Manhattan. I found his introduction about dealing with the questionable areas of the outer boroughs quite interesting. So if you're fascinated with NYC, are a resident, or just want a fun read, do yourself a favor and read this, it really gives an honest insight into the true spirt of NYC- the people.

What a challenge -- but this codger will try to catch up with Helmreich's help
By Robert C Ross
This book is an inspiration to this codger, who has inherited the walking gene from his grandfather Peter who clocked thousands of miles in Madison, Wisconsin. I've hiked in London for over a thousand miles, in Paris for five hundred miles, and so far in New York approaching 2,500 miles, including four times around Manhattan Island -- so far.

Helmreich has outdone me, but if I can last as long as Peter did, I might get to 5,000 miles.

This book works great on my iPhone, and I carry several others as well, for further information or for different points of view. They include:

The Encyclopedia of New York City: Second Edition -- a treasure trove of information by many excellent authors; the search function could be improved but the iPhone search function really works well enough.

New York City Essential Guide: Best NYC Travel Guide for Tourists -- I have two dozen for Manhattan -- but this one is great for answering questions of how to get to various sites -- it amazes me how many people ask me directions.

The Bronx: The Ultimate Guide to New York City's Beautiful Borough (Rivergate Regionals Collection) -- You simply cannot top Ultan for accuracy, enthusiasm or love of this somewhat neglected borough.

Walking Brooklyn: 30 tours exploring historical legacies, neighborhood culture, side streets and waterways -- there are so many wonderful guidebooks to Brooklyn, but for a walker, this one, supplemented by Google for each walk, cannot be beat for this codger.

Staten Island: A Blue Guide Travel Monograph (Blue Guides) -- smallest borough, smallest number of attractions, small guidebook fitting it all perfectly.

William Helmreich, I am going to channel Peter and walk in your footsteps and see New York City through your eyes.

A Street Level View of One of The World's Great Cities
By Michael Slater
A first rate account of life in this glorious and grand city from street level , which is where it is best enjoyed. If you intend to visit for the first time, if you are a newly arrived resident looking for orientation or if you are like me and a resident of more than forty years, this is a book you can enjoy and learn from. Put in in your Kindle and take a walk. You'll be glad you did.

From Publishers Weekly
This second big winter thriller by a writer named Patterson (see Fiction Forecasts, Oct. 19) features a villain (a multiple-personality serial killer/kidnapper) whom the publisher hopes will remind readers of Thomas Harris's Hannibal Lecter, and a hero who is compared to those of Jonathan Kellerman. Unfortunately, the novel has few merits of its own to set against those authors' works. Hero Alex Cross is in fact a black senior detective in Washington, D.C., who is also a psychiatrist and has a facile but not entirely convincing line of sentimental-cynical patter. The villain is Gary Soneji/Murphy (read Hyde/Jekyll), who kills for recognition, and finally kidnaps the kids of prominent parents. Alex is soon on the case, more enraged by Gary's killing of poor ghetto blacks than by the Lindbergh-inspired kidnapping, and becomes involved with a gorgeous, motorcycle-riding Secret Service supervisor who is not what she seems. Soneji/Murphy is eventually captured--but can the bad part of him be proven guilty? There is even a hint at the end that he may survive for a sequel, though the reader has virtually forgotten him by then. Spider reads fluently enough, but its action and characters seem to have come out of some movie-inspired never-never land. If a contemporary would-be nail-biter is to thrill as it should, it urgently needs stronger connections to reality than this book has. Come back, Thomas Harris! 150,000 first printing; Literary Guild main selection.

From Library Journal
Alex Cross, a black Washington, D.C., police detective with a Ph.D. in psychology, and Jezzie Flanagan, a white motorcycling Secret Service agent, become lovers as they work together to apprehend a chilling psychopath who has kidnapped two children from a posh private school. The psychotic villain, who aspires to become more notorious than Lindbergh baby kidnapper Bruno Hauptmann, is effectively nightmarish. Atypical characters, sex, sometimes shocking violence, and several surprising plot twists are all attention-grabbing, while short chapters with a shifting viewpoint add brisk pacing and genuine suspense. Patterson's storytelling talent is in top form in this grisly escapist yarn. Highly recommended for public libraries. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 11/1/92.

Alex Cross #1 Along Came a Spider
By Steve W
I found that James Patterson's #1 book "Along Came a Spider" is a very interesting read. It it not too often that I can find a psychological mystery to be this exceptional. The Gary Soneji/Murphy out smarting the police with being a psychopath, potential Multiple personality disorder/ personality fatigue, and being the actor with having homicidal "1 year/5 year/lifetime plans" to be famous like he feels he should be is very interesting. From what I heard (without reading any other Alex cross books), this book will set up for some storylines in the next few books allowing for some interesting storylines for the book now.

This book series is the Law and Order: Criminal Intent series of James Patterson. While the story revolves around the crime and solving the crime, there is a huge element to the psychological, motives and the "criminal intent". It involves the "ticking" of the criminal to why they would do the things they would do. It can range from money to famous to just being a pure psychological evil driven madman. All in all an A+.

In this book by itself, there is one drawback. It can be really slow sometimes. After Soneji's trial and conviction (about half way through) starting with part 4, it starts dragging while Alex Cross continues the case. But it does lead up to a very interesting ending (the last few chapters), in which I will be willing to give it a pass.

Like I said, an A+ and an A+ book!!!

Two thumbs up!!!
By Kimmie
I have read all of the Alex Cross books except for two, well now one. The reason I waited so long was because the first two were movies.. I have seen both movies and enjoyed them! I figured the books would be the same as the movies... I thought WRONG "Along Came a Spider" was completely different than the movie with minimal similarities! The book was excellent, wish I never waited to read it!!! Can't wait to read "Kiss The Girls!"

Dr. Alex Cross--Father, Grandson, Detective, Psychologist, Man-of-His Word
By NanaP
James Patterson, the master of the psychological thriller, has created a brilliant Washington, D.C. detective who can psycho-analyze AND catch the bad guy--or girl, while being a loving father to his two children and devoted grandson to his Nana Mama. Alex Cross is the "real deal" whom you soon feel you have known and adored as a family friend for your entire life. This ranks right up there with the best of the thrillers!

Amazon.com Review
In a world with no poverty, no crime, no sickness and no unemployment, and where every family is happy, 12-year-old Jonas is chosen to be the community's Receiver of Memories. Under the tutelage of the Elders and an old man known as the Giver, he discovers the disturbing truth about his utopian world and struggles against the weight of its hypocrisy. With echoes of Brave New World, in this 1994 Newbery Medal winner, Lowry examines the idea that people might freely choose to give up their humanity in order to create a more stable society. Gradually Jonas learns just how costly this ordered and pain-free society can be, and boldly decides he cannot pay the price.

From Publishers Weekly
Winner of the 1994 Newbery Medal, this thought-provoking novel centers on a 12-year-old boy's gradual disillusionment with an outwardly utopian futuristic society; in a starred review, PW said, "Lowry is once again in top form... unwinding a tale fit for the most adventurous readers." Ages 10-up.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9-- In a complete departure from her other novels, Lowry has written an intriguing story set in a society that is uniformly run by a Committee of Elders. Twelve-year-old Jonas's confidence in his comfortable "normal" existence as a member of this well-ordered community is shaken when he is assigned his life's work as the Receiver. The Giver, who passes on to Jonas the burden of being the holder for the community of all memory "back and back and back," teaches him the cost of living in an environment that is "without color, pain, or past." The tension leading up to the Ceremony, in which children are promoted not to another grade but to another stage in their life, and the drama and responsibility of the sessions with The Giver are gripping. The final flight for survival is as riveting as it is inevitable. The author makes real abstract concepts, such as the meaning of a life in which there are virtually no choices to be made and no experiences with deep feelings. This tightly plotted story and its believable characters will stay with readers for a long time. --Amy Kellman, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

Read the one and two star reviews BEFORE you read this book! And SPOILER ALERT for those who haven't read yet!
By Ireland Mom
I got this book and decided to read it before I let my son read it, as recommended by the other reviewers on here. I'm glad I did. It is a book that would be worth reading, but is NOT appropriate for a child of any age. Perhaps a teenager, but definitely not a young child. Also, what the other reviewers say is true about the ending of this book. The book is fairly well written until the end. It's like the author ran out of time, or else ran out of story idea, and just abruptly ends the book! The boy escapes with a baby, trying to save it's life, but then the story literally just ends! They are going down a sled, and the book just stops. What happens to them? Do they die? Do they live?? Do they find other people in a town or just freeze to death?? There is no warning that the story is about to end, except that you see that you are running out of pages. I would have actually rated the book with four stars, for the rest of it, had it not been for the completely abrupt and poor ending. I would not recommend it for children, as there are several inappropriate things for a child under the age of about 14 or so, but the actual book itself is decent until the end. The reason I feel that it is not appropriate for a younger child/preteen are as follows:
It covers such things as sexual arousal in the young boy, as he starts having wet dreams
It discusses killing babies, old people, and anyone who disobeys the rules more than twice. For example, the author goes into graphic detail about how the baby is killed, by describing the scene where the father is injecting the baby with a lethal dose of something through the fontanelle (soft spot) on the baby's head. Jonas discovers that all of the people who are "released" are actually killed by lethal injection.
It covers descriptions of such things as war injuries, broken bones jutting out of skin, etc.
For those able to handle this type of subject matter, it would be fine, but just be prepared for a very abrupt ending with many loose ends that never get tied up...you are left hanging to wonder what happens (and not in a good way) because after building the story, it literally just stops with no explanation. I've never read a book that did this quite this badly. Had I realized it was going to end this way, I would not have actually read the book at all. However, until the end, it's a pretty well written book with an interesting storyline. It makes you see what life would be like without choices, pain, colour, memories, proper family, etc. It also shows the burden that would come in knowing what real life is like without being able to share it with anyone else.

THE PERFECT COMMUNITY...OR IS IT?
By lawyeraau
This thematically complex novel for pre-teens, teens and young adults, or, for that matter, readers of any age, was a winner of the 1994 John Newbery Medal for the Most Distinguished Contribution to American Literature for Children. The novel centers around Jonas, a highly intelligent pre-teen boy who lives in a seemingly perfect, well-ordered society, where everyone's physical needs are met. It is a planned society with very few surprises. Everyone is taken care of according to the dictates of this society. Jonas lives with a designated mother, father, and sister.

When the children turn twelve, they are told at a special ceremony what profession they will each engage in for the rest of their lives and train accordingly. Jonas is selected to be the Receiver of Memories, the most honored position within their community. This decision will rock Jonas and his world. When his training begins with the current Reciever of Memories, Jonas will be given something very special, and life will never again be the same for him.

This haunting novel, written in clear, spare prose, explores the many complex themes underlying this seemingly utopian/dystopian world, providing much food for thought. The ending is ambiguous in its meaning, allowing the reader to formulate it as the reader sees fit, through the prism of one's own imagination. It is a simply beautiful, enriching book that should withstand the test of time. Bravo!

Let the memory live again
By Almaric
I have not seen the movie and came into the book completely blind, other than knowing it was about a 'topia of some sort. I'm glad for that, as I found every little light shown on the society to be fascinating. I found myself re-reading many of the various conversations between the two main characters, trying to glean as much "feel" (or lack thereof) that I could about their lives and society. Good stuff there!
Of course, not a lot of history or past development is doled out. Not many details. No matter. I quickly just relaxed and allowed myself to follow along with the 12 year old protagonist. His world, his views, his development. And like him, I found the "cradle to grave" dullness strangely compelling with it's order, peace and contentedness. Cue the other shoe.
I felt a bit let down by the ending. Too vague for me. Guess I'll get the next book and take a peek...
Recommended as a great intro to distopian fiction. No Swearing, No Graphic Violence (some injuries and a few heartrending scenes), No Sex (budding sexuality is alluded to).

This book was very informative. I was 5 weeks pregnant when I miscarried last week. I am having a hard time dealing with it because I wanted this baby so bad. He or She was gonna be my last and final munchkin and then all of a sudden and completely unexplained, that was take from me. This book reminded me that I am not alone. I highly recommend it to anyone e going through a miscarriage.
