Core text for my college English classes.

As a core text for my freshman writing classes, I use the Blair Reader to integrate the diverse ethnic backgrounds of my students through writers with whom they can relate. The Blair Reader also provides an instructor's resource manual that guides the teacher through the use of collaborative group and multimedia activities to stimulate student writing. I would highly recommend this text to any writing or reading instructor who faces the challenge of the diversified classroom.

Blair Reader--- Full and Divers

This book was a core requirement for my freshman english class in college. It is a great text that familiarizes the student with many diverse writing styles and subjects, as well as the essentials of analyzing and interpreting literature. Though this is no doubt a dread to most college students, I really enjoyed the discussion in-class that was brought about by entries in this book (and i'm not even a nerdy English major!). One that stands out to me is an excerpt from Jonathan Kozol on illiteracy in america. I wrote an in-depth analysis of that work for the class, and have kept the skills I learned to this day. Whether used as a text, for leisurely reading, or for exposure to critical thought, the Blair Reader is an exellent volume. I highly recommend this book (even if your Enlgish professor doesn't make you buy it!).

The Blair Reader is a book of different essays that everyone can relate to. There are stories in this book that will make some people say,"thats what happened to me". Some of the stories in the Blair Reader will have you looking at certain situations differently. It acually opens your mind up to things around you in everyday life that you don't normally think about.So, read it, and you'll probably find it enjoying too.

About the Author

Sascha Steinhoff is a computer expert by training and a photographer by passion. He used several rainy seasons in Galway, Ireland to learn everything he needed to know about scanners and scanning software. He soon realized that a good scan requires as much work and know-how as a good camera shot, and that a scanning workflow is essential to get the job done efficiently.

Sascha recently gave up his position as an editor of a leading German technical magazine to move to Bangkok, Thailand, where he is currently working as a freelance journalist and project manager.

Perhaps better suited for beginners

I've used VueScan for several years on a few different scanners. I've also used other programmes (notably Silverfast), so I wouldn't consider myself a beginner when it comes to scanning, and not so much so for Vuescan either. I was already familiar with the basics of scanning transmissive (E6, C41) and reflective media, scanner and film profiling. In purchasing this book, I was sold by the tag line: "Everything you need to know for perfect scanning". I expected this book to provide advanced tips on getting the most out of Vuescan and my scanner. Specifically, I was hoping for workflow suggestions, curves/profiling information for specific film emulsions and enhanced/expanded descriptions of the nitty gritty in Vuescan.

After reading the book over, my impression of it is that this is ideal for those new to Vuescan and scanning. The first half of the book introduces the reader to scanning with information on Vuescan interspersed within the text. Chapter 7 onwards starts getting interesting as workflow information is suggested for several typical media types. These workflows though aren't as much a discussion of advanced workflow options or trade-offs, or suggestions on how various Vuescan settings might affect/improve/detract from the desired output for the selected media type, rather it is a cookbook style step-by-step instruction on how to scan. In my opinion everything in the first seven chapters of this book can be easily found on the Hamrick site or via a quick survey of various online sources on scanning. What I did find very useful were Chapters 8 through 13 - chapters with reference information on each option in Vuescan. These chapters provide detailed information on the various settings as well as the author's insights. These are useful and are something that I find myself going back to occasionally.

To conclude, I think this is a great book for beginners to scanning or Vuescan, but those already versed with the Vuescan or advanced "scanners" might be better off elsewhere.

Helpful, but Not Definitive

If all you want from a scanner is to copy some letters or an occasional magazine article you probably have no need for this book or for VueScan software, for that matter. But if you need to preserve some old photographic prints or even digitize some images captured on film this book will be of interest.

What this book does is to provide information on VueScan software: what it is, how the interface looks, a detailed explanation of resolution, file formats available for output, input media, special techniques like multiscanning, and suggested workflows. There is also a detailed explanation of each of the VueScan menus.

This review is not a comparison between VueScan and SilverFast, another leading brand of scanner software. But I can most assuredly say that unless your scanner comes with either VueScan or SilverFast, either will do better than the manufacturer's software for your scanner. One might wonder whether this book is needed, since the VueScan software comes with a very helpful interface that will guide you through scanning and an online help resource. If you really want to get the most from your scanner and VueScan, the book is helpful. For example, even though the manufacturer provided software probably didn't mention it, it is possible to get an HDR-like scan from your image, using multiexposure. The VueScan User's Guide, which can be downloaded, explains how to do this, but the Bible does a slightly better job, and since I found it easier to read through the book than the PDF, I discovered this procedure more quickly.

There are elements of VueScan that may be useful to the photographer which are not mentioned in the book that are touched on by the VueScan site. For example, for the best results, one's scanner should be profiled using an IT8 target. The book doesn't advise where to procure an IT8 target. The VueScan website provides links. If you have Photoshop on your computer, VueScan's installation will provide a Twain file so that you can call up VueScan from within Photoshop and import your scan directly into image processing. The book doesn't mention this (or if it does I couldn't find it; there is no index).

Ultimately, photographers who want to get the most from VueScan will want to read this book. But they should not expect to learn everything there is to know about VueScan. They will still have to peruse the VueScan web site and other on-line commentaries to which it links.

Just what I needed

I've had a well-known brand of scanner for three or four years. The results were so disappointing that I had basically given up on using it with the manufacturer's software. But I have a large collection of photos (printed in various sizes, slides and negatives of just about every brand)which I still wished to scan. So I tried out Vuescan a couple of months back.
I was immediately getting better results, and have started rescanning the pictures I did previously. The documentation that comes with Vuescan is comprehensive but unclear to the first-time user. It was enough to get me going, and gave reasonable results. But there was a lot of guess-work involved, I still didn't really know what was happening under the hood, and I'm sure some my improved scans are still sub-optimal.
This book was exactly what I needed. It spends quite a bit of time on the technicalities of scanning, before getting to the practicalities of using Vuescan. The reward for paying attention to this stuff was that it made everything much clearer when I got to working with the program itself.
The book is quite comprehensive, but briefer than the Vuescan Manual. It is well-organised and clearly written. I changed some of my default settings in line with Steinhoff's recommendations, and my scans were visibly better again. After reading this book, I found the Vuescan documentation much easier to follow.
I have no complaints about this book. Every user is different, of course, aso this book won't satisfy everybody. But Steinhoff's book was exactly what I needed.

Reader's Favorite...Four stars!****The Beach House Mystery by Tara Ellis is Book 3 of an on-going series, but it can be read on its own. This was a surprisingly good book, given the fact that it is written in present tense and I usually don't like novels written like that. The story follows two girls, Sam and her friend Ally, who visit a beach where Sam's father is restoring an old boat. What was supposed to be a good vacation on the sand and surf turns out to be a mystery that desperately needs to be solved.

There is a lot going on: there is a sea monster, a mystery of the founder of the town, the lighthouse has a mystery of its own, and there is a ghost that is still looking for her husband. Needless to say, the two girls need help and they get it from Sam's brother Hunter and his friend John. Together, the foursome needs to solve these mysteries before something big happens. But with so many forces against them, can they do it?

Boy, this was a roller coaster ride that I loved. Sam and Ally are such cool kids. The story reminded me a lot of many R.L. Stine books that I used to read all the time. The dialogues are great and the story is very invigorating. I really loved the fact that the story was more about the mystery. It was focused and that made it more entertaining. The characters were strong and very well-developed. Tara Ellis is a really good writer, and she knows what she is doing, so that made the experience even better.

Another successful addition to the Sam Wolf Mysteries

Another delightful adventure from the Samantha Wolf Mystery series. Not being familiar with US geography, I checked Google maps again to follow the intriguing coastal descriptions of Washington State and Oregon. Tara' Ellis' novels are definitely educational.

Twelve-year-old Sam is a wonderful role model for middle-grade readers who are looking for exciting and intelligent mystery and adventure. She's such a resourceful, courageous and loyal character--very likeable. In 'The Beach House Mystery' once again she's joined by best friend and fellow sleuth, Ally. With the help of Sam's older brother, Hunter and his friend, John, the kids unite to solve a mystery that involves spooky night stuff on the beach including wailing voices, rolling fogs and an old lighthouse. The action ramps up when they meet their holiday neighbours and soon find themselves entangled with adult criminals.

I especially enjoy the strong theme of friendship in the Sam Wolf Mysteries. The banter between the kids is natural and convincing. The stories are cosy and wholesome with just enough action, excitement and adventure to make them very suitable for middle grade readers.

A fun, fast paced middle grade mystery

I absolutely love these middle grade mystery stories. I loved them when I was in that age group and I love them now. This one definitely did not disappoint.

Sam and Ally are once again caught up in a mystery while visiting a beach house near where Sam's dad is overseeing the remodel of a boat. This time, they get their brothers John and Hunter involved. There's a lot of mystery surrounding a lighthouse and a legend about the founder of the town disappearing in the late 1800s and a sea monster and a ghost that haunts the waters, searching for her lost husband. All together it makes for an intriguing story.

The ocean and lighthouses fascinate me, so I was excited for this book and I'm glad I read it. It's a fun mystery for anyone, not just middle grade readers.

While it didn't detract from the story there were some minor editing problems throughout and in the first five or six chapters John and Hunter's names were mixed up which took me a minute to straighten out. Again, this didn't decrease my enjoyment, but be aware that you may run into this if you read.

Wonderful story!

I grew up on the Trixie Beldon and Nancy Drew books. This author is in the same league, but the stories are set in a more modern era. Kids nowadays will enjoy the author's inclusion of smart phones, texting, and similar understandings of how 12 year olds currently live. I like how the author respects that pre-teens and young teens are intelligent, yet still make good and bad choices, and creates characters that show this. Too many middle grade authors create characters this age that are still pretty dumb. The story also treats the reader as intelligent, allowing the reader to slowly figure out the mystery along with the characters of Sam and Ally. I'm in my 50's, but still love a good mystery. Love this author! I'll be reading the others in this series!

Reassuring Resource

Susun Weed's newest book is a much-needed look at healing for Down There for women & men.

Sexual & reproductive health can be a shady part of taking care of ourselves - a lot of painful emotions to deal with, in addition to trying to get help from doctors. I love Susun Weed's work because she's so respectful to the body's processes of healing. Her approach starts out at the tiniest level of do nothing & gather information, and moves gradually toward more invasive measures if healing is still necessary. She addresses emotions, she speaks up for the organs in our bodies so we can get to know them better, and she offers hope - no matter what sort of challenge she's talking about in each chapter.

I highly recommend this book, especially if you feel frustrated with doctors, an issue that's not healing, or using pills for every solution.

Comprehensive Guide for Women's Wellness

This is one of the best guides for personal nourishment and nurturing that's come across our desk. Given that the 21st century probably provides more strains and stresses on the female mind and body than at any time in history, learning about the natural and healing treatments presented by Weed in "Down There" is an excellent investment of time and money.
Although written to appeal to women of a wide variety of ages, those entering menopause and beyond are likely the ones to be most comforted and assisted. There are also very effective exercises presented to nourish and tone the pelvic region for optimum sexual health and pleasure.
There is also a section of the book devoted to men's sexual health, although we know from personal experience that women are the ones more drawn to and open to using homeopathic remedies and herbal healing. But the advice and information offered here is just as detailed and healing.
The news media, advertising, the internet - sex always seems to be a dominant topic of conversation. But Susun Weed does much more than talk about it -- she provides some wonderful healing roadmaps and remedies for enjoying good sexual health as well as overall good mental and physical health.

There aren't many books on female and reproductive health out there, especially those focusing on holistic and natural medicine, which is why this book is invaluable for every woman to own. This book is packed with so much vital wisdom. It describes a healthy pelvic floor, bladder, prostate, cervix, clitoris, uterus, ovaries, penis, testicles, vagina, and vulva and offers alternative, complementary, integrative, homeopathic, and allopathic remedies for their distresses. This is the type of book that you keep coming back to and referencing whenever you are having a female problem. I also loved the introductions with Grandmother Growth and the body part poetry even more. It really made me fall in love with my feminine power. This book is not only about the corporeal aspects, it intertwines the physical with the spiritual.

Humility is the gateway to learning. Prepare to be humbled, and learn! This guide for "complete idiots" wrestles with ancient truths of complicated historical twists and abstract metaphors, then jumps back in the ring for a match with modern physical and matematical theory. The result is a respectable triumph of simplicity without condescention, thoroughness without over complication, and readability in spite of rigor. Philosophy and practical application combine to help the reader onto solid ground in this poorly understood (to Western minds)ancient Eastern practice.

Excellent Version of the I Ching

This book is definitely a worthwhile edition of the I Ching for anyone interested in the subject matter. Over the years I have collected numerous versions of the I Ching, and this one is probably the most readable of the lot of them.
The background history of the I Ching is well researched and presented, and the chapters relating it to Chaos Theory, the Holographic Paradigm, and others are extremely interesting and valuable reading.
The heart of the book is, of course, the presentations of the hexagrams. While not as "in-depth" as some of my other translations/interpretations, this isn't necessarily a bad thing - many of those other books give you enough information to thoroughly overwhelm you. The interpretations here are written in modern English, and are very understandable. What makes them truly useful, however, is the way the author relates the meanings of the hexagrams to the history of the political situations occuring when the book was put together in its "modern" form (during the time of King Wen and the Duke of Zhou). This makes the hexagrams MUCH easier to relate to your own personal situations - let's face it, most of the traditional interpretations leave this background out, and instead just present phrases for the hexagrams and individual lines which can be extraordinarily puzzling and apparently unrelated to the question at hand. By relating each hexagram to the actual historical happening that inspired the traditional interpretations, the hexagrams are put into a much clearer (and more easily applicable) light.
Some of the versions of the I Ching I have which are written in "modern English" just give the authors own personal take on the hexagrams - while sometimes useful, these "translations" are usually somewhat suspect because they often leave the original texts of the hexagrams and lines out. But that is not the case here! The traditional texts are included, and then presented with additional explanatory text by the author. So, you get the best of both worlds. Sometimes the authors own interpretations aren't quite applicable to your question, but the traditional text is, and sometimes it's the other way around. This edition of the I Ching give you both!
I wholeheartedly recommend this book. If this is your first exposure to the I Ching, it will serve as an excellent introduction, and certainly one you will use for years to come (even if you purchase several other different translations, as I have). If you are like me, someone who has studied the I Ching for years, you will immediately appreciate the clarity and depth the author presents.
Don't be fooled by the title. You do not need to be a "complete idiot" to get great value from this book!

Finch equips Lenox with his own Bunter in the person of a former butler turned political secretary, but the pair come across as weak, warmed-over versions of the golden age Dorothy Sayers originals. All the makings of a modern mystery are wrapped up in a Victorian theme.

Nero and Agatha Award nominee Charles Finch's fourth installment in the Charles Lenox series, following THE FLEET STREET MURDERS, is set in London's tony Mayfair section near Hyde Park, as the American Civil War draws to a close. Amateur sleuth Lenox returns from a summer-long continental honeymoon with his bride, Lady Jane Grey. As a wedding gift, Lenox buys his wife a painting, "the blurry one [by a] chap named Monet. Rhymes with bonnet, I think. I never heard of him myself."

The tour of the Continent draws to a close too soon for the newlyweds, as Lenox has been elected as a Member of Parliament, where his brother Edmund also serves. Their parliamentary colleague, Ludovic Starling, asks Lenox to look into the apparent murder of his teenaged footman, Frederick Clarke, though venerable Scotland Yard has taken charge. "Mayfair seemed somehow more civilized. It certainly wasn't a quarter of London that Lenox associated with murder." But there's a seedy side to Mayfair, where Clarke and Starling hid secret lives.

As Lenox's investigation with his apprentice, John Dallington, immediately identifies the murder weapon as a pavement brick, Starling insists: "Shall we just let the Yard handle it?" He hints that he is to receive a title from Queen Victoria, "a roundish, placid, unbeautiful woman." Disturbing issues Lenox discovers about the Starling family that Clarke served cultivate curiosity: "Starling's behavior was odd. Why ask Lenox onto the case and then try to kick him off? The title?"

"The butler did it!" Long-time servant Jack Collingwood lays claim to the homicide, lying to protect one of the Starlings' "quintessentially English" household. But which one? Starling himself? One of his sons? Or perhaps one of the many servants? The investigation is sped along by old Uncle Tiberius, who discloses that Starling's son Paul has not left for Africa, as suggested by Lady Elizabeth Starling, "that devil woman."

"True, visceral terror gripped at Lenox's heart," as he confronts the presumed murderer. Grim secrets reside at the Starling mansion and hide from Lenox, but "[t]he truth wants to come out." When it does, those Lenox least suspect had been in his midst all the while. The culprit is "a character that was dreadful and dark, capable of evil things."

All the makings of a modern mystery are wrapped up in a Victorian theme. This is really two novels: one of intrigue, the other of a richly written detail of life in London as it was 15 decades ago. So grab a spot of tea and enjoy both.

****SPOILER****I hate to break up the Charles Lenox party, but A Stranger in Mayfair did not hold my attention as much as the previous books did. My interest headed south with The Fleet Street Murders. I wasn't ready for Charles to get married and I wasn't convinced that Lady Jane, a woman of nobility, would even have him. His drinking doctor friend, Thomas, and his wife, Toto, are having a baby and that's about the only interesting thing about those two. Charles spent so much time visiting them when he should have been out sleuthing. Graham, the lovely man servant/butler belongs in the Lenox townhouse, lighting fires, delivering telegrams, serving drinks and making all things right in the world of Charles Lenox. He can never be happy in Parliament. Lady Jane's butler is a total dud and the book tells us nothing about how he relates to her household. Maybe it's just me, or maybe this book was rushed to press? I will buy the next one and hope it gets back on track. A little romance is O.K., but I'm reading for the mystery and the history.

The elegant way that Charles Finch writes had me from the first book, A Beautiful Blue Death, which, along with The September Society, were both very, very good. Finch's style is totally unique and can't be compared with any other writer in this genre. This last book just needed more plot and character development. In particular, I would have liked to have known more about his brother, Sir Edmund, and about his family and the contents of the Lenox home estate and holdings.

An intriguing mystery, full of effective twists.

First Sentence: "Clara, who is that gentleman?"

Charles Lenox has, at forty, entered a new phase in his life. He is newly married to Lady Jane, for years his best friend and neighbor, and he is newly elected to Parliament's House of Commons. The second of these events necessitates spending less time doing detective work--but not yet. A colleague in Parliament, Ludovic Starling, has asked Lenox to investigate the murder of one of his footman. As Lenox, and his prot�g�e Dallington, move forward in the investigation, they are met with resistance not only from Scotland Yard but from Starling, who asks them to give up the case. An attack on Lenox stiffens his resolve to find the killer.

Finch has become a favorite of mine and this book, once again, demonstrates why as there were so many levels on which I enjoyed this book.

We are introduced to Lenox and Lady Jane through a conversation held by others, via a prologue which actually works as it allows their back story to be told without it seeming forced or cumbersome. Each of the characters are fully drawn with very brief exposition that brings them to life. One thing by which I am very impressed is how, with each book in the series, the characters lives individually grow and develop. This impacts not only each character but the relationships amongst them. Relationships are something Finch does extremely well, including the awkwardness of a newly married couple and a man making a major change in his career.

Mr. Finch's knowledge of Victorian England is evident in every page and yet, again, so seamlessly incorporated into the plot that it is informative rather than intrusive. Through Lenox's work in Parliament, we learn the concerns of the period and meet historical figures in their proper settings and appropriate roles. Through the birth of a child, we observe the customs and etiquette of the time. Although Finch is American, is studied at Oxford, now lives in the UK and delightfully conveys British humor and understatement, "For an Englishman is was a strange time to be in France....first because of Napoleon's rather uncouth attempt to conquer Europe..." The dialogue has a natural flow but also reflects the speech of the time.

Neither of the above is meant to undervalue the plot. The mystery is intriguing, and full of effective twists. I like that solution is no more obvious to Lenox than to us, the reader. We are presented with numerous possibilities, each dismissed, until the final resolution. Might I have figured it out? Perhaps; but the story involved me to the point where I wasn't deliberately trying.

The only reason I did not rate the book as "excellent" was the use of portents which were completely unnecessary. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and do highly recommend it with the proviso suggestion of starting the series at the beginning.
