Marriage Designed by God

I wonder where this book was when I got married thirty-two years ago? Would I have actually read it and applied it to my marriage? Could I have given up my strong-willed I am in charge attitude? I know the answers to these questions and I'm thankful that I have a husband who is patient and loves me unconditionally . I was so focused on being in charge and pointing out things my husband was doing wrong, I forgot to focus on what God had designed a wife to be.

As I read this book, I kept thinking that this book is all about me once upon a time. We can sometimes get so focused on what our spouse is or is not doing, that we become the leader in the marriage and soon that causes big problems. We are to helpmates; not take on the man's role. God has specific roles for each of us, but when we step out of our roles, strife and a struggle for control ensues.

I loved the honesty and transparency the author wrote about her struggles and how she overcame them. We all sin, but the good news is that God forgives us. He wants and desires for us to have a Godly marriage. She talks about some of the causes of MARITAL POWER STRUGGLE . I could relate to each one and know I still need work in some of the areas . I was encouraged as I read the book and know that I will continue to go back through the book to reflect on His wisdom and unconditional love. "My level of respect and biblical submission toward my husband is a direct indication of my level of reverence for and submission to Jesus Christ." When I read that sentence, I stopped for a minute to really let that soak in. It is nothing to do with our husband, but rather what our character is.

"You will get the most out of this book if you can chew in it slowly and think deeply about yourself and what God is speaking to your heart , allowing Him time and freedom to highlight certain areas for you." Thank you for a book that encourages us and helps us become the wife God designed us to be. "My goal is not ultimately to please my husband ..... My goal is to bring great joy to my Lord Jesus."

Great "Marriage Manual" for a Bride to BE

The Peaceful Wife: Living in Submission to Christ as Lord was written by April Cassidy, a wife, mother, part time pharmacist and Christian marriage blogger. The book is a story of her experiences with changing herself and her marriage as she works toward having a marriage as God intended. Cassidy stresses the importance of respecting your husband and allowing, even encouraging, him to be the leader of the house. Husbands and wives should both give love and respect as well as receive it though marriage. God commands husbands to love and honor their wives and wives to respect and submit to their husbands. When a wife shows this to her husband, he will eventually tend to love, serve and honor her more. The author does a great job of teaching wives how to respect their husband, whether they be Christian or not. The author also talks about Biblical submission for the wife. The book has a lot of lists and suggestions based on Bible verses to learn from and put into everyday practice for marriage and Christian life.

Marriage gives us a glimpse the love and pain God feels in his relationship with us. The way we treat others, comes from our soul and God counts the way we treat others, including our husbands, as the way we treat Him. Marriage is a sacred covenant designed by God. Refusing our husbands God-given leadership hurts the reputation of God's word to nonbelievers and may keep them from finding the real love and life only obtained through Jesus. Husbands are to be the wives top priority in their human life, followed by their children. Having a marriage as God intends for us, gives a good example to our children for them to take into their lives.

Marriages do not come with a manual, but this is a book that would make a great engagement gift to a Christian bride-to-be. I say Christian, as there is a lot of reference to Bible verses that would turn a non-Christian off. Marriage is about a husband and a wife becoming one person, leaving their families and making a family of their own. Love involves great cost and sacrifices and the total heart change that is required to make a successful Biblical marriage is a long process that needs to be worked on daily. To totally benefit from this book, it needs to be used over a length of time, not read and put away. It should be read slowly, sometimes even reading parts over and over, allowing time to think about it and allow God to speak to your heart.

My Review:
I gravitated towards this book when I seen it come up for review. I was a wild girl to say the least when my now husband found me. I had a stubborn streak and a mouth to match. There was nothing and I mean nothing that you could say that would change my mind or my heart. I was always right about everything and there was nothing anyone could do to detour me from it. My sweet husband had his work cut out for him. What I didn't realize was that God was getting ready to change me. And God really had His work cut out for Him. I blamed Him for a lot of hurts that come my way so much so that I stayed mad at Him for years and refused to speak to Him, again.

He has done a lot of changing in me---in my heart and my mind. I am way more submissive now than I have ever been. To the point that my husband would say too much sometimes. Let me say that when you change your focus to a more Christ centered focused you will do what ever it takes to please God. Disappointing Him further was something I have worked years to change within myself and because of that I depended on Him even more than I ever had.

The Peaceful Wife is one woman's journey to a life of selflessness. A life of handing everything over to God more. So much so that her life changed as a result. And I here to tell you that yours will too! God is a Father that demands respect and He doesn't take too kindly to pride. If you have even a smidgen of pride in your heart, He is determined to rid you from it. The Peaceful Wife is a great book to find out how to start on a journey of this magnitude on your own with God steering the ship!

About the Author

Ilya Mikhelson had more than 30 years of experience in design, research, and teaching design of bridges, tunnels, subway stations, and buildings. He wrote numerous publications, including Precast Concrete for Underground Construction, Tunnels, and Subways and Building Structures.

Tyler G. Hicks, PE, is a consulting engineer and a successful engineering book author. He has worked in plant design and operation in a variety of industries, taught at several engineering schools, and lectured both in the United States and abroad. Mr. Hicks holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cooper Union School of Engineering in New York. Good Reference

So I read this book, and I think there is good coverage of topics overall. Go back and look at the good reviews that people have left about the first edition of this book, a couple people have made previous reviews in regards to using this book for engineering practice and as a study aid for the P.E. exam. The civil and structural engineering principles are perfectly in line, and the book is very thin to carry around; so you'll hardly notice it is in your briefcase.

I noticed that this book is not up to date, which is why I have a four-star review here. I will explain why the book is not up to date.

For instance, on page 132 of this book is a page on base plates for columns. The equation this book has for allowable bearing pressure is 0.35*f'c*square root(A2/A1). Now in the ACI 318-11 and AISC 360-05 codes, the equation is 0.85*f'c*square root(A2/A1). So the mathematical coefficients are different due to updated codes, but the equations and engineering principles are the same.

In Chapter 2 or 3 of this book, there are some formulas for properties of geometric sections. The author used Roark's Formulas for Stress and Strain, 4th edition. There is an 8th edition of Roark's formulas in print right now.

good basic formulas

I bought this book mainly for the frame analysis. I have referred to it on several occasions since buying it. I would recommend it.

Check the variables!

Inconsistent notation. For example, on the same page, it shows bending stress = M/S and shear stress = SV/Ib, except the two Ss aren't the same value. Again, on the same page, it shows S = I/c and SV/Ib = 3V/2A for rectangles. Great. But knowing that the shear modulus (S)=bh^2/6 and I=bh^3, SV/Ib 3V/2A. Why couldn't they use shear stress = QV/Ib like everyone else? Q being the static moment, not the shear modulus. In fairness, they do an example on the next page making it clear they aren't the same thing, but why use the same variable on the same page two rows apart from each other when they don't represent the same value!? It's supposed to be a quick reference guide. If you quickly looked at that page and ran with it, you'd get the wrong answer.

An outstanding book on reading the Tarot de Marseille

It's been a long time since I was as excited and intrigued by a new 'how-to' book on reading the Tarot. Ben-Dov describes the Tarot as a work of art, through whose details a full range of human experiences can be revealed. The book features the Marseilles Tarot deck—a deck that's gaining greater interest and appreciation among English-speaking Tarotists. [Additionally, Ben-Dov has created what I believe to be the most elegant restoration of the classic Conver Marseille deck available, The CBD Tarot de Marseille, which process aided him in his close attention to detail in the cards.[

What has been notably missing in English Tarot literature are good, non-Waite-based meanings for the four suits. You need look no further. The focus here is on reading the cards through the scenarios one perceives when looking at the images. For the Majors, Ben-Dov says the possibilities are open. Nevertheless, he points out valuable interpretive perspectives derived from symbolic, historical and mythological associations, many of which I found both original and obvious (once-stated)—in other words, extremely helpful as kick-starter phrases for the cards. Through comparison and contrast among the Majors he shows how the cards can relate to one another. Emphasis is on the therapeutic approach, rather than being predictive or proscriptive. Providing an excellent introduction to practical reading issues, he stresses developing familiarity with psychological practices.

Previous authors offered one of three approaches to the Marseille Minor pip cards: 1) a straightforward transfer of the Waite-Smith Minor Arcana meanings to the Marseille deck, 2) a memorized set of meanings often derived from Etteilla, or 3) a personal synthesis of number-plus-suit meanings for each card. Ben-Dov bases his sensible Minor Arcana explications on the work of Alejandro Jodorowsky, emphasizing visual cues in the cards along with number, which make their arrangements 'sensible,' and easy to learn and build on. His descriptions of the thematic progression within the Major and Minor suits provide an immediate handle on each segment of the deck. In keeping with his therapeutic approach, the Court Cards represent attitudes and characteristics of the querent rather than other people, although there's nothing to stop you from applying them to others. I only wish that Ben-Dov had included sample readings utilizing the Minors like he did for the Majors, as his examples were so insightful.

Spreads are kept simple with some innovative approaches to working with both Major and Minor suit cards that are well-worth trying out. His simple instructions for creating your own spreads gives you an infinite palette of deeply meaningful options to choose from.

I have two pet peeves: Ben-Dov completely ignores the first two hundred years of Tarot's history when he describes the Marseille Tarot as the 'genuine model', with the 'true order' for the cards, saying it offers, "the most faithful and accurate representation of the ancient Tarot symbols." The oldest decks (15th century Italian) are quite different in style, and there were several different orders for the cards in its first century. It would be better to describe the Marseille-style decks as the most long-lasting, consistent design, which is not to be scoffed at. My second pet peeve involves misunderstandings of the Golden Dawn system of Tarot reading, resulting in minor errors that are not centrally relevant to this work. Personally, I think he should have left out his few Golden Dawn references or listed the differences in an appendix.

Overall, this book offers fresh, practical instructions for reading the Marseille Tarot that will give you a great appreciation for the details and special characteristics of this deck, as well as great insights into the reading process itself.

Open Reading = Up and Reading

Anybody who has shuffled Yoav Ben Dov's tarot de Marseille feels at home. The images are crisp and gentle. The deck slips around with an ease that mirrors the flow of the symbolic universe, or perhaps, like a mirror where the symbolic universe flows.

Feeling at home in a house of mirrors is an image I would like to keep in mind while reading Yoav 's book: Tarot, The Open Reading. Tarot books are like amusement parks: we enter them knowing exactly what we will find while secretly hoping to be surprised. Yoav's book delivers the thrill of the familiar while packing the bang of a few surprises. The eternal beginner gets to ride the Bumper Cars of tarot's history and the Mechanical Bull of tarot meanings. Those who suffer from vertigo can take it slow and go around in the Carousel of court cards or take a spin in the Teacups of pips. Yoav takes both the French and the English traditions through a Tunnel of Love inviting us to peek at their (rather incestuous) hanky panky.

The main ride is, of course, the Marseille Tarot itself by means of what Yoav calls the "Open Reading", a Reverse Bungee whose admission ticked reads "everything is a symbol". This is Yoav's way of telling us to hang onto our hats. The symbolic universe sweeps us off our feet way before the cards come out of the box. This is a palatable idea for those of us who feed from abstractions. As every part of our bodies becomes arcane, every gesture we make with them can be interpreted.

Through the open reading the tarot becomes infinite. Yoav accomplishes this without cracking any eggs. His voice is always kind, always patient. To us it may seem as if this book accompanies his tarot when in truth he restored the tarots to accompany his book. After years of work to make it whole we now have access to Yoav's vision.

Three good reasons to buy this book

After reading dozens of books on the subject – or should I say, lists of random meanings and rituals spiced up with rambling new age-ish gibberish- some people might feel like giving up on studying tarot, unless, of course, they find the right book to read. I honestly think there are very few books on tarot that are worth their price, and Mr. Ben Dov’s The Open Reading is one of those. Since much has been said in the previous reviews, I will just list my three good reasons to buy the book:

- An anti-dogmatic and compelling approach
While some chapters of the book are devoted to finding the possible meanings of each card, this is done in order to introduce the reader to the author’s method of understanding tarot. But, as a matter of fact, there is no such a thing as an absolutly “correct” meaning. This is not to say that it’s unimportant that a card shows up instead of another one just because the same thing could be signified by different spreads: quite the contrary, as we are invited to think why that card showed up, without having some self-proclaimed guru think and feel on our behalf. Reading this book is about mastering a (good) method, not our memory skills.

- A deep and fun way of enhancing one’s intuition, creativity, awareness
One might feel that Ben Dov’s method ultimately leads to total chaos. However, by stating that “everything is a sign”, the author exhorts us to pay special attention to our feelings and intuitions and trust them. Of course, previous knowledge and careful study of the deck is needed (e.g. knowing that the page of swords is left-handed before getting to read for someone else might really help), but while it is always good to have some ready-to-use meanings in case we run low on inspiration (it’ll be another sign, after all), most of the work is done when we are able to relate to the spread, which means we can understand our own reaction to the cards.

- It “works” with every deck
I tend to be very picky when it comes to tarot decks, and I’m a Marseilles guy as a rule. The Open Reading was specifically written for the author’s lovely restoration of Conver’s Tarot of Marseilles (which can be bought on his website). However, Ben Dov’s book could prove very helpful even to those who prefer reading on a Rider Waite, or Wirth, or Italian style deck. In fact, as I mentioned above, this book is not about learning meanings: it’s about learning how tarot cards could mean something.

About the Author

Turan G�nen is Professor of Electrical Engineering at California State University, Sacramento. He holds a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from Istanbul Technical College (1964 and 1966, respectively), and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University (1975). Dr. G�nen also received an MS in Industrial Engineering (1973) and a Ph.D. co-major in Industrial Engineering (1978) from Iowa State University, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Oklahoma (1980).

Professor G�nen is the Director of the Electrical Power Educational Institute at California State University, Sacramento. Previously, Dr. G�nen was Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the Energy Systems and Resources Program at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Professor G�nen also held teaching positions at the University of Missouri-Rolla, the University of Oklahoma, Iowa State University, Florida International University and Ankara Technical College. He has taught electrical electric power engineering for over thirty one years.

Dr. G�nen also has a strong background in power industry; for eight years he worked as a design engineer in numerous companies both in the United States and abroad. He has served as a consultant for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Aramco, Black & Veatch Consultant Engineers, and the public utility industry. Turan G�nen is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a Senior Member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He served on several Committees and Working Groups of the IEEE Power Engineering Society, and he is a member of numerous honor societies including Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Eta Kappa Nu, and Tau Alpha Pi. Professor G�nen received the Outstanding Teacher Award at CSUS in 1997.

About the Author
Hugh D. Young (late) was Emeritus Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University. He earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from that university. He earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. He also had two visiting professorships at the University of California–Berkeley.

Dr. Young’s career has centered entirely on undergraduate education. He wrote several undergraduate-level textbooks, and became a coauthor with Francis Sears and Mark Zemansky for their well-known introductory texts. In addition to his role on Sears and Zemansky’s College Physics, he was also author of Sears and Zemansky’s University Physics.

Raymond J. Chastain is currently an Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of� Louisville. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia working on observational astrochemistry at radio wavelengths. He is currently engaged in physics education research, particularly in investigating the factors that lead to student success in the introductory physics sequence. He is the recent recipient of the Faculty� Favorites Teaching Award.

Dr. Chastain’s professional career has been dedicated to teaching and student instruction. Prior to his graduate work in physics, Dr. Chastain received a graduate degree in education and worked as a high school teacher. After completing his Ph.D., he returned to the high school classroom for several years before accepting several teaching positions at the college level. He has been involved in multiple programs aimed at improving student learning at both the K—12 and college levels, including several programs working with K—12 teachers to strengthen their understanding of the material they are teaching and the pedagogy used to deliver it.


Philip W. Adams is a Professor of Physics at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from Rutgers University in 1986 and then held a postdoctoral research position at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ for two years.

Prof. Adams is an internationally recognized low temperature experimentalist and has published over 70 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and has given many invited presentations on his work at international workshops and conferences on condensed matter physics.

Prof. Adams has had a career-long interest in physics education. He has taught introductory physics for engineers and for non-engineers many times in his 25-year tenure at LSU and has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards. Most recently, he helped produce and was, in fact, the narrator for the MasteringPhysics online Video Tutor Solutions for the 13th edition of University Physics by Young and Freeman.

This Textbook isn't that great...

So I had to buy this textbook for an International Investing class I was taking. The textbook really isn't that great. First, there are many typos - as early in as the first chapter. The editors did not do a very through job. The authors are not always the most consistant with their nomenclature throughout the text. Additionally, they are not very detailed with their mathematical explanations, frequently throwing formulas at the reader without showing their derivation or explaining them in detail. When the authors are not throwing formulas out to the reader they tend to discuss ideas in very broad and general terms, and the examples in the book are very short and terse. The broad explanation of ideas and short examples can make it very difficult for the reader to grasp the concepts in the book without significant outside assistance. Unless this book is a required text there are probably better textbooks in print that deal with global investments.

It is not bad, but the editing has not been done very rigorously. In the first chapter alone, there is close to a mistake or typo every two pages (especially in the example). The mistakes do not hinder the learning process, but still...

Nevertheless, it is well written and is pedagogic.
