An Axe To Grind

A previous reviewer of this book called it "objective," I find that analysis utterly laughable. I purchased this book for a class, if you are doing so as well be aware that the professor very likely has an axe to grind and is wishing to push their views upon you through the use of this book. I am of the belief that a class should be taught as objectively as humanly possible (my criterion for a good professor,) when objectivity is absent the student is essentially being indoctrinated and fed their views as if a baby chick hungrily accepting food from their mother. This book, with one chapter being the exception, is completely slanted--opposing sides of an issue are never presented. In short, this book SUCKED!

Very good but way overpriced

I looked at this book closely as a possible supplemental volume for an Environmental Ethics course I teach. The cases are very well done: Each one has a succinct introduction, presentation of facts, discussion in relation to EE principles or theories, and useful "questions for reflection." The cases would mesh very nicely with any standard EE anthology, and would generate a lot of discussion. I was about to order it, but then checked the price. Since it is way out of line for a book of essentially 200 pages, and since there are websites with useful, free cases, I have to recommend not buying the book unless cost does not matter.

Compelling cases, interesting reading

This book discusses various ethical situations regarding environmental issues, which could be rather dry material. However, the author writes in a more down-to-earth style, which makes it more enjoyable. The topics are certainly thought-provoking, and made for many interesting discussions at the dinner table.

When "Forest Gump" meets "Suzie Wong" ...

THIS Thai Novel has everything I like in a Thai novel: Joy, love, crime, hope, friendship, Thailand and Thai people's beliefs and religion, and a great personal development of the main character, too.

I started to read the novel late yesterday evening and I read it in 3 hours without stopping...
And it's one of THOSE Thai novels I will read once more for sure. Because it gave me all I want from a good read: I liked the protagonist as well as the minor "players", the setting in Puhket is perfect because I love that island, and it was the first time someone wrote - something positive about Thai prisons! :)

The story starts with Steven West, 38 years old, is leaving Manchester/England for the first time in his live. Destination: Thailand, Island of Puhket. He is not the sharpest knife in the drawer and not really ugly, but somehow ... insignificant.
At first it's a bit like watching Forest Gump meeting Suzie Wong :)
After his first adventures involving bargirls, a black eye and a massage parlor, he gets himself a scooter for exploring the island. He also has gotten a certain insight about his money, Thai girls and lady drinks ...
Then he meets Pin the Flower Girl. She is selling roses in the streets - and is visibly pregnant. Her Ex, a Leeds character called Dean has a tattoo and a temper, and slowly Pin opens up to Steven and tells him her sad story. Then, on one of their excursions - after visiting the Zoo and a temple where a monk gives them both his blessings and a wristlet to Steven, Pin shows him her secret place. Where the story with Dean ended once and for all...

Steven's fate takes an ugly turn when the police comes to arrest him for the murder of Pin and her unborn child. The leading Detective on the case is a playboy called Sawat Deewat. He is only for 12 months in the police for making merit with Buddha. And, at first he has no intentions to listen to Steven's story - because it's too bizarre to believe.
So Steven will be put into the Puhket Provincial Prison, where he will have some strange encounters. But being a kind character with a jai dee - a good heart - he will find friends and supporters. And the truth will come out and Steven will find his real vocation...

Having read The Thai Dragon, The Kiss of the Dragon, and Cocktails & Dreams, this is an entirely different kind of story.
And I liked it because who knows Thailand and the Thai a bit, also knows something about their beliefs in Phii - ghosts. The foreigner will laugh and say - what a superstitious kinda folks. I say - lucky they are, with an imagination so colourful we farangs can't even imagine in our dreams ...

A DAMNED GOOD READ.

I have just finished reading The Flower Girl and absolutely loved it. I have read all of Guys novels and love his style and how he develops his story lines. I think he is probably the premier mystery and thriller author out of the U.K. today. Guy's stories of the mysteries of the East are enthralling and loaded with first hand knowledge of the people, customs, the very essence of the Land of Smiles.
I try to leave comments on Kindle UK from here in the US but there is a spanner thrown in the works somewhere and they don't go through.
So , I give Guy Lilburne 5 STARS on The Flower Girl and a BIGGER 5 STARS for Cocktails and Dreams.

Epic Story!

I read 1 or 2 books per week. I downloaded "The Flower Girl" after reading Mr Lilburne's The Thai Dragon and The Kiss of the Dragon. I started to read this last night about 10 pm and did not stop until it was finished in the early hours. This afternoon, I started to read it all over again.....still cannot put it down. I have never done that before. All 3 books are outstanding.

"The Flower Girl" had an old ex Navy Fighter Pilot laughing myself silly in some parts and bawling like a baby in others.

WELL DONE! Mr. Lilburne.....If I ever catch you over in The Land of Smiles, I would be honored to buy you a drink!

A classic for a hematologist

This is a new edition of Colman's classic work. It is thorough, well-documented, well-organized, and surprisingly readable. I have owned sequential editions for that reason. I find the text much more helpful that internet for these kinds of patients.

JUST GETS BETTER!!!!

Holy cow, what an AWESOME continuation!

Trisha Leigh NAILED it with Alliance, book two in the Cavy Files. I'm still reeling from the book's climax, and I'm already anxious to find out what happens next as Gypsy and the other Cavies attempt to regroup and formulate a plan. Each new person, each new destination, brings yet more uncertainty for them as they struggle to ascertain who they can trust and where they can be safe. Unfortunately, every change brings more questions, and they seem to be faced with more enemies than allies. No matter who tries to recruit them, reality is everyone wants more than they are willing to give.

Norah's struggle with her self-worth is heart-wrenching as she works to see her value within the group. As much as she longs for the life of a "normal" teenage girl, she knows her Cavy family truly needs her regardless of her feelings of being helpless and useless. Her abilities, along with the other Cavies', are enhancing as the GRH-18 expands and stretches their abilities.

The frustration they endure through the entire story is summed up by this quote: "The bottom line is that we’re staring at a bunch of crappy choices." No matter which direction they turn, someone or something must be sacrificed. Who or what will it be as they race to find answers about the deadly computer virus that could wipe out millions?

Trisha Leigh has a gift for creating characters you want to know. Whether it's this story, or another, you'll turn the last page feeling invested in the characters and their struggles. The seamless way she transitions from book one to this one keeps the story flowing and brings the first flooding back as though you finished reading yesterday. Keep writing, Trisha!

Well worth the wait!

This series is so addicting. These misfit teens with their unique abilities cause drama, suspense, mystery, and intrigue. Questions get answered in this installment but many more are uncovered. Trisha is very adept at writing about teen angst and love. She seems to know how their minds work, which is a great feat in that no one seems to know what teens think these days. Even though it is a YA novel, it is actually filled with mature teens that have to deal with very grown up type of situations such as which group of people want to kill them the least. Highly recommend this series.

The Cortexiphan Kids! That's who they are!!

So far I have loved everything Trisha Leigh has written and Alliance is no different! After the ending of Gypsy, I needed its sequel in a BIG way. From start to finish this second installment kept me guessing, surprised me, and broke my heart.

There's not too much I can say without giving everything away. I loved the growth of Norah (Gypsy). I understand her draw to Jude, but the little lady just needs to realize that Shiloh (Mole) is the guy for her! I detest love triangles, but I'll let her make her own decision. There. That's where I stand.

Now I found the struggle between the Olders (agh, I keep wanting to say Others... difference TL series!) and the CIA to be particularly interesting. Yes there's a divide, but I'm STILL not sure which side I actually trust! The CIA had me at my wits end by the time I finished the book. I'll save my judgement for them until I re-read Alliance after it is released.

The Siphons? CREEPY! That’s all I’ll say about them.

And now the ending. It’s kind of a non-ending transition. Clearly there will be a third installment. I need it now. :)

I also love that this story takes place in my home state of South Carolina! That makes me a little biased, lol! ;)

I think this is a great tool for technicians, most of us can improve on our softskills and if you would like to better yourself or your company this is a great training book to read, more importantly do what they say, thats the hard part of breaking your old ways.

Authors know QBASIC, but don't know English

This book is entirely unsuitable for beginning programmers, and difficult to read even for experienced programmers. All the information is there, even on advanced topics, but the authors write in mock-Soviet Academese. There is also no reference appendix or any way to quickly look up commands (though QBASIC itself provides that). Here are a couple of sentences from the first paragraph in the book: "Statements must be written according to QBasic syntax rules. Why, for example, is the comment text in the INPUT statement enclosed in quotation marks, and the variable name placed after the comma?" This is gobbly-gook to anyone who doesn't already know alot about programming in general and BASIC in particular. It gets worse from there. Do not buy this book unless you are an experienced BASIC programmer looking for advanced info on QBASIC for DOS audio and graphics programming, and don't want or need any kind of useable quick-reference to the language.
