Unified Reality Theory describes how all reality evolves from an absolute existence. It also demonstrates that this absolute existence must have consciousness as an attribute that's intrinsic to its being. Thus, Unified Reality Theory shows that consciousness, rather than being a product of the evolution of physical reality, is itself the source of what we experience as physical reality, and that physical reality is itself but one aspect of an evolving universal consciousness.

Unified Reality Theory shows that, most fundamentally, this absolute consciousness-existence evolves into reality by means of a single process: self-relation. That is, consciousness-existence becomes reality by forming relationships with itself, analogous in a very limited way to what happens to a rubber band that's twisted upon itself, i.e., it remains whole while differentiating into other forms.

Thus, Unified Reality Theory demonstrates that reality is a state of existential self-relation. The idea that the universe consists of existence which has formed relationships with itself isn't new; Taoists have understood this idea for at least a couple of thousand years. What's new here is the presentation of this idea in the form of a detailed and defined structural model that correlates with the behavior of physical reality as described by science in general and physics in particular.

Unified Reality Theory is a model of reality that describes in detail how the universe gets something from nothing—that is, it shows how the somethings we experience as reality evolve from a more fundamental level that's nothing. "Nothing" doesn't mean nonexistence, just existence that's not a "thing."

The level of existential nothingness from which experiential somethings arise is referred to in the model as absolute existence. Central to the description of how something can come from nothing is the understanding that absolute existence must have consciousness as an attribute that's intrinsic to its being. That is, consciousness isn't something separate from absolute existence, but rather the word "consciousness" and the phrase "absolute existence" are two different ways of pointing toward the same undefinable level of nothingness from which all somethings arise.

In viewing consciousness as fundamental, Unified Reality Theory takes a position on the nature of reality that's in opposition to the dominant material realist conception of reality held in the West. Material realism includes the idea that the machinations of physical reality in general and brain function in particular somehow give rise to the phenomenon we call consciousness.

It is my position that material realism is the flat-Earth idea of our time, in as much as it is a mistaken view of a situation derived from a limited perspective. Unified Reality Theory broadens that perspective by showing how physical reality evolves from consciousness, from a reality that is completely non-physical.

About the Author
While a premed undergraduate at the University of Illinois, I gave up religion and became a materialist after my first course in anthropology. During my first course in physics, after learning about wave-particle duality and uncertainty, I gave up materialism and decided to look at the relation between consciousness and material reality in the light of these phenomena, unhampered by the usual scientific preconception regarding that relation, which assumes consciousness to be a product of material reality. And so, dissatisfied with what religion had to say about the nature of God and with what science had to say about the nature of consciousness, I set out to find a reasonable and rational explanation for both. This book is the result. I presently practice medicine in Milwaukee and continue to spend my spare time exploring and writing about the relation between consciousness and reality.

Must read on consciousness!

I have read this book while it was available on-line from the author's Internet pages. I had had no clue that the material was meant for the publication so I mailed the author to strongly encourage him to do it.
I found it important, because author's name has not been so far uttered on the same breath with the likes of Capra, Chalmers or Deikman. And as it usually happens with the works of this magnitude, when written by the new name, the path to the publication may be especially long and frustrating.
Why I did it? Because the book is an excellent read on its own. The author has the natural skill to express himself by way of a comprehensive, communicative language and exceptional ability to present the complex concepts in a simple way. And most importantly, the material in the book charts a very coherent model of reality with clearly stated assumptions and logically drawn conclusions. The author does not play with words and the book is not a typical contemporary philosophical exercise in linguistics.
If the reader is interested in the models of reality developed by the Eastern philosophy and Western science - then this book would deliver a surprising bonus - it is neither the rewrite nor the reference to all that has been written so far. The model presented in the book is absolutely original and not based on any obvious sources other than author's own powerful thinking process validated by personal experience.
The spotting of the difference between the awareness and consciousness, the reflection on the reality as the existence's experience of itself are the brightest and most interesting threads of the book. All of these subjects are communicated with the simplicity of the sage. And illustrated with appealing graphics.
The reader will appreciate that the author does not forget that he is presenting the model - usually the writers dealing with the Big Questions related to the nature of reality turn into the patronizing mode of the all and the only wise. The author of this material is gloriously free from the self-exaltation and pompousness.
The on-line book was composed of two parts. The second one, focused on the model of reality as the existence's experience of itself is a must read for everybody eager to extend his conceptual horizon and deepen the understanding of his consciousness. I warmly recommend this book...

Lao Tzu, Newton, Einstein, Kaufman

Most people do not question how reality all comes together, they just accept it as it appears. I began questioning at about age 14 when I dropped out of Sunday School and started to investigate Eastern philosophies. I was introduced to the "new" physics by Gary Zukav's Dancing Wu Li Masters. That book ignited in me a hunger for a greater understanding of this field. The Tao of Physics confirmed my belief that all the answers could be found in this "hard science"; quantum physics.
When I became seriously ill a couple of years ago, my reading list changed emphasis. I read Deepak Chopra's Quantum Healing, some Caroline Myss and Louise Hay among others. Each book was helpful it its own way, especially Chopra's works and I found no reason to believe that any of these mystical, spiritual or alternative approaches to illness, or to life in general, would be denounced by Grand Unified Theories or Theories of Everything (GUTs and TOEs). On my road to recovery I came across a pre-publication copy of Steven Kaufman's Unified Reality Theory. I devoured it and it was delicious.
In my quest for understanding the nature of reality I have read quite a few good books on quantum physics and how it relates to the world in which we live. I even finished A Brief History of Time by Steven Hawking. Newton, Einstein and Lao Tzu have nothing to argue about; Mr. Kaufman has brought it all together beautifully. I truly believe that hundreds of years from now he will be listed among the great thinkers of all time. I understand why this book took ten years to write; Unified Reality Theory is a masterpiece. I hope his next work doesn't take nearly as long.

In Unified Reality Theory: The Evolution Of Existence Into Experience, Steven Kaufman presents a persuasively argued, philosophically profound, and aptly presented original study, centering upon the hypothesis that "reality is a state of existential self-relation". Consciousness and awareness is truly the source of physical reality, rather than a byproduct, and physical reality is merely one facet of a universal consciousness. Unified Reality Theory is very highly recommended reading for dedicated students of metaphysics and the philosophical underpinnings of the human experience.

About the Author

Douglas Stuart is Professor of Old Testament and Chair of the Division of Biblical Studies at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He holds the B.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. Among his earlier writings are Studies in Early Hebrew Meter, Old Testament Exegesis: A Primer for Students and Pastors, and Favorite Old Testament Passages.

Bruce M. Metzger (1914 – 2007) was a biblical scholar, textual critic, and a longtime professor at Princeton Theological Seminary. Metzger is widely considered one of the most influential New Testament scholars of the 20th century.�He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2007).

David Allan Hubbard (1928 – 1996), former president and professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, was a recognized biblical scholar. In addition to over 30 books, he has written numerous articles for journals, periodicals, reference works. He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1996).

Glenn W. Barker (d. 1984) was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1984).�

John D. W. Watts (1921 – 2013) was President of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Ruschlikon, Switzerland, and served as Professor of Old Testament at that institution, at Fuller Theological Seminary, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He earned the BA and MA from the University of Manchester, England, and the PhD from King's College, University of London. He also wrote 2 Corinthians and James in the WBC series.

Lynn Allan Losie is�Associate Professor of New Testament at Azusa Pacific University.�A generalist in New Testament studies, Dr. Losie teaches courses in the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, and the Pauline Epistles, as well as in the background areas of Greek, early Judaism, and the greater Hellenistic World. He has published articles on the New Testament and had served as the associate New Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2013). Ordained as a Baptist minister, he has also served in pastoral ministry in Southern California and Oregon.

Difficult task

I have often thought that one of the most difficult tasks that a biblical scholar must face is trying to write a one-volume commentary on several books of the Bible. This is especially true when the only obvious linkage is that they are found consecutively in our English Bible. Douglas Stuart appears to have done an excellent job of providing a scholarly but readable and lively commentary on the books of Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, and Jonah. Despite the fact that he has tackled five books that have divergent (although not entirely unrelated) themes and different settings, Stuart has provided us with commentaries on each of these books that are insightful and scholarly. Needless to say, more space is given to the longer books (Hosea covers approximately 220 pages of text versus just 21 for Obadiah), but none receives short shrift.

The introductory material to each of these prophets is enlightening, and while not extremely detailed, provides the reader with a decent amount of background material. The more technical matters regarding the Hebrew text are generally set apart in the "Notes" section that follows immediately upon the English translation of a passage, and any Hebrew in the commentary section itself is accompanied by an English translation, meaning that a working knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary for fully benefitting from the commentary. The commentary section (as well as the introductions) provides not just interpretation of the text but, where important, crucial background information regarding geography, culture, societal practices, and the like. (For example, in the commentary on Amos there is a significant amount of material that enables us to better understand the nature of the practices that Amos is condemning.)

I highly recommend this commentary to anyone seeking to gain a greater knowledge of one or more of these five books.

Excellent commentary!

This is one of the best commentaries you could buy for these minor prophets. Douglas Stuart does an excellent job expositing the texts of each book. I bought this mainly for Hosea, but have been thankful to have excellent evangelical scholarship applied to Joel and Jonah as well. I highly recommend this for your library.

Excellent commentary on five of the Minor Prophets

Somehow Douglas Stuart has pulled this off and the result is a scholarly but readable and lively commentary on the books of Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, and Jonah. While more space is given to the longer books (Hosea covers approximately 220 pages of text versus just 21 for Obadiah), none receives short shrift.

While the introductory material to each of these prophets is not extremely detailed, it is enlightening and provides the reader with a decent amount of background material. Does NOT include Connect subscription, a change from previous versions

The textbook is fine, but it looks like it no longer comes with a Connect subscription. Previous versions of this textbook did include it, the professor tells me, and it was unclear from this page whether or not the subscription was included. Changing what's included amounts to an unadvertised $80+ increase in price and could influence a professor's choice of textbook and a student's choice of what edition to buy or rent. I'm very disappointed with that change and the lack of clarity on this product page.
If the publisher (or Amazon) either makes this product page clear about what's included and what's not (and indicates if there is still a version that includes the Connect subscription); or provides those who bought this edition with a Connect subscription, I will edit this review to reflect. (LIkewise, if I get clarification and it turns out the professor was mistaken, I will change my review. Though, in any case, it should be clarified whether or not the textbook includes a Connect subscription. )
The textbook itself is pretty good--reasonably well-written and appropriate for the 21st century. My only complaints so far are around the lack of a Connect subscription and lack of clarity around whether or not there is a version of this textbook that includes it.

About the Author
Dr. Donald E. Lighter currently serves as the Associate Medical Director for Clinical Outcomes Programs for the Shriners Hospitals for Children, where he is responsible for leading the design and implementation of programs to evaluate and improve the care of children in the Shriners system. Shriners unique hospital system provides free care for children with serious orthopaedic abnormalities and burns. After finishing his medical degree at St. Louis University Medical School, Dr. Lighter completed a pediatric residency and practiced general pediatrics in both private practice and academic settings for over twenty-five years. Dr. Lighter s experience in managed care has spanned nearly twenty years, having led the formation of two IPAs and three HMOs. Over the past ten years, Dr. Lighter has worked both with commercial and Medicaid HMOs, and presently he is Director at The Institute for Healthcare Research and Education and a founder of CyberCE, Inc., an online educational consulting company. Additionally, Dr. Lighter is a professor and a member of the core faculty for The University of Tennessee s Physicians Executive MBA program, an innovative curriculum that relies heavily on the Internet to provide didactic material for physicians working toward a Masters in Business Administration degree. He also serves as a Senior Examiner in the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Program.

Superb text

This textbook is wonderfully written and a good addition to the previous text by Dr. Donald Lighter. I find this text perfect for someone new to the world of health care quality. His more advanced text would be perfect to read after this book. I would like to see Dr. Lighter come out with a workbook with answers to complement his three textbooks. Dr. Lighter is one of our frontline leaders in the health care quality movement.

Simple, perhaps overpriced, but I liked it a lot

Wonderfully refreshing look at pullups, dips, hanging leg raises, and related exercises. A great book if your motivation is lacking or lagging, or your current regimen has lost its luster. Kavadlo is a genial author, enjoyable and encouraging to read. He has a wonderful knack for keeping it all simple. The exercises, workouts and regimens in this book are all understandable and inviting. And they are, as the author writes, all you really need to do for your upper body. Also, as another reviewer has already pointed out, Kavadlo has other books but, unlike so many other strength and fitness authors (especially those published by Dragondoor), he isn't constantly plugging them. In fact, he doesn't even mention them, as far as I can recall. Four and a half stars.
