This book tells what you need to know about academic medicine as a career. It is for the fellow, resident, medical student or practicing physician who is considering a future in academic medicine, and for the junior faculty member who has recently embarked on an academic career journey. Senior faculty members may note renewed enthusiasm for mentoring younger colleagues as they read the book. Your guide is Robert B. Taylor, MD, a veteran of more than 27 years as an academic clinician, who joined a medical school faculty after 14 years in private practice and rose to become chairman of a very successful academic department. In addition, Dr. Taylor is author of 23 medical books and hundreds of papers. The author tells of his own experiences, supplemented by contributions by 20 other medical academicians. Written in a conversational, easy-to-read style, this book gives practical advice about academic life. Dr. Taylor gives examples of successes (and some mistakes to avoid) as he writes about the workings of the academic medical center, important academic skills including teaching students and writing grants, and how to manage your career and your life, with specific advice for readers in each career stage. For the clinician who is considering or has begun an academic medicine career, this is a "must-have" book.

Must Read For Clinicians Considering Academics
By Fred A. McCurdy
This is something clinicians, who are desiring to be a part of an academic faculty, need to read. There is much more to teaching medicine and being an academic than just being a good doctor.
