About the Author
William Bay is president of Mel Bay Publications, Inc. He is an accomplished guitarist and trumpet player and has performed on both instruments in a wide variety of professional settings. He is experienced as a performer and composer of music ranging from jazz and rock to the classics and sacred. He received his bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis and his master's from the University of Missouri. Bill has received international acclaim for his innovative teaching methods, and he has authored over 200 books with sales in the millions. Mike Christiansen is a Professor and Director of Guitar Studies at Utah State University. In 1994 he was selected Professor of the Year at Utah State. He is the author of numerous instructional books, has recorded several CDs, and appears on fourteen instructional videos. He has had articles published in several magazines including Acoustic Guitar and Soundboard, and has also conducted many workshops for guitarists and educators. In addition to this work geared toward teaching, he has played in many top bands and ensembles, has written and performed radio jingles, has backed up many artists on recordings and has written and recorded music for TV and educational films. Currently, in addition to his teaching and writing duties, Mike does solo work, performs with the Lightwood Duo (a clarinet-guitar duo), and is a member of the group, Mirage.

Excellent Classroom Instruction Book

We teach guitar at a private music studio and this is the collection we picked for our students. We teach age 5 to 85 and all students are encouraged and guided through all their playing experiences with great theory, great playing exercises, and a simple progression of skill developing songs.

This book was very helpful. It's an easy read and easy to follow directions. I used this book as a textbook in a guitar class, but if you are thinking of learning the guitar on your own this would be an excellent book to get you started;)

Through boat reviews and advertisements, sailors are bombarded with product information about new boats in sailing magazines. They can tour new boats to their hearts content at boat shows. And they can compare these vessels in annual directories of sailing manufacturers and distributors. Eager vendors will readily send sales literature on request.

But what of those of us who have elected to sail those boats euphemistically referred to as gently used or previously sailed? These boats, of course, are affordable, often well-equipped, and typically in sailaway condition without extensive commissioning. So how do you make comparisons and determine which of these boats is right for you?

John Vigor has selected 20 from a vast field of older sailboats and offers comprehensive reviews and rating scales for comparison. His criteria for selection were that the boat must be seaworthy enough to go offshore and small enough to be easily handled by two. The boats he selected range from 20 to 32 feet.

Lin and Larry Pardey, who have circumnavigated twice in sailboats less than 30 feet in length, argue that small and simple boats are better for voyaging couples. They have noted that large vessels are often the cause of abandoned cruising dreams. Theyre too expensive and thus steal too much from the cruising couple without the assistance of additional crewmembers or power devices that can fail at the most critical moment. Larger, more complicated, sailboats have more systems that break, testing the skills of even the handiest. Their advice in sum is to go small, go simple, and go with the confidence that comes of handling it yourself.

Good starting point

This book is an excellent starting point for those trying to wade through the ocean of sailboats available on the used market, who want to get "the most bang for their buck." The reader should come away with at least several favories, allowing him/her to narrow the search for the "perfect" boat. At the same time, other boats will be stricken from the list of possibilites because of information contained in this book. It is aimed at the person who wants to get out there and sail on the best boat possible, but must shop carefully due to budget considerations. The short descriptions and comparisons of the boats are helpful, as are the details of the "known weaknesses," and interviews with owners. I just wish the book could have profiled more than 20 sailboats, I hated to reach the end. As a companion to this book, I would recommend "Inspecting The Aging Sailboat" by Don Casey. I would buy this book again.

A great place to start a boat search

I liked this book and I probably would like John Vigor if I ever meet him. He has an easy-to-read conversational style. The best aspect of each of these boat reviews is seeing how an experienced sailor looks at and evaluates a boat's design and how it is constructed. J.V.'s approach is a valuable tool to apply to any boat you may be considering for offshore work.
For those of you who haven't seen the book yet a word of caution - there are no photographs of any boats in the book. All the visuals are line drawings and sail and 'floor' plans. In addition, I found one glaring error in the chapter on the Cape Dory 25D. The line profile drawing is for (I believe) the Cape Dory 25 - a distinctly different boat. The other drawings for this boat are definitly not of a Cape Dory 25D either.
These are all interesting boats - several have been single handed around the world, - one set a speed record for crossing the Atlantic. Of course they aren't the only boats capable of crossing oceans. You can expand your search by looking for boats by the same designer and / or the same builder. Sometimes it might pay to look to larger or smaller boats in a particular line. Find owners on the web and shoot them an email. Many people are glad to share sailing experiences. That reminds me that one of the best parts of this book is the Owner's Experiences section.

I've read Vigor's book, I've bought an Albin Vega within the past 3 weeks, I'm no circumnavigator (and never will be), but now have my boat of choice for the duration. I at least know if I do want to go offshore, my boat, properly prepared, can do it.
The rater that speaks of Vigor's head being 'up his stern' should lighten up or, at least, give some reasoning for his unsubstantiated comments.
Obviously, if your heading offshore you probably won't just read Vigor's book (or choose a Cal 20 or Catalina 27) but the book sure narrows the choices to make. And, of course, Vigor's choices aren't the only ones. As many raters said, 'a good starting point' and, contrary to captain 'up his stern' and his innuendo's, there's not a boat in Vigor's 20 choices that are inherently 'bad'.
Sorry to Capt. A. Spears and his review which was, nevertheless, helpful; Tanya A. sailed around the world in a Contessa 26 not a Bayfield 25. I only know that 'cause I read her book and once lusted after Contessa 26/Bayfield 25 vessels; only to choose, in my opinion, an even better boat with my 'new' Albin Vega 27.
I believe Vigor's book, for those contemplating serious, offshore voyages, should only be the beginning of the research; but a great place to start.

About the Author

Ruth Suehle works in Red Hat's Open Source and Standards group, which aims to help upstream open source software communities. She also leads the Fedora Project's marketing team. Previously an editor for Red Hat Magazine, she now leads discussions about open source principles as a moderator at opensource.com. Ruth is also a core contributor to Wired's GeekMom blog, where she covers the adventures of motherhood alongside technology and sci-fi.

Tom Callaway is the Fedora Engineering Manager at Red Hat, where he has worked since 2001. He has been active with Fedora since its creation and currently serves as the Fedora Packaging Committee Chair, responsible for defining the standards that Fedora uses to keep its package quality high. He also maintains 300+ packages in Fedora, which may also mean he is legally insane. He enjoys pinball, gaming, sci-fi, frogs, geocaching, traveling, and causing trouble with his wife Pam and son Jimmy.

"What now" redux

When I reviewed Raspberry Pi Projects for the Evil Genius a while back, I considered it a necessary addition to any RPi hackers library. This too serves a similar purpose, with a lot more material, presented by two people involved in Fedora Linux. While Pidora seems to lag behind the RPi OS pack overall, this doesn't get in the way of doing a very effective job of giving you many, many projects of both traditional and physical computing natures.

Some of what's in here is pretty oldschool - people have been running Asterisk PBXes for a long time and the process isn't appreciably different on the Pi. Some of the projects do address some needs unique to the RPi and its market space; for example, there's extensive instructions on building a GCC cross-compiler toolchain to get around the long compile times for work done on the Pi itself. It also makes instructions available for some common second-computer uses like arcade emulation and (one of the RPi's most popular uses) media computing.

But what you came for are the things that the Pi is especially good for - portability and physical computing. It delivers quite effectively too; controlling a camera via gphoto, for example, or a car-mounted geocache tracker with an off-the-shelf GPS module, or controlling a 3D printer, or even something as mundane as a plant waterer. There's even some truly off-the-wall stuff like waterproofing the board with a hydrophobic paint from Rustoleum.

It does come up a bit short in some ways, though; while it's largely distro-agnostic and makes some use of Adafruit's Occidentalis distro for some physical computing projects, it pretty much ignores RISCOS entirely. And for some reason the software radio receiver project doesn't have a transmitter companion. Other than that, though, this is a must-purchase for anyone who wants to do more than noodle around in Scratch or Python.

65 Raspberry Pi Hacks From Basic Configuration To A Build-It Yourself Supercomputer

The Raspberry Pi is an inexpensive ($25-$35) general purpose Linux Computer designed for education and which can easily be hooked to your monitor or television a keyboard and Internet Connection. Like some other books this "Hacker's Guide" does not omit the basic (and not so-basic) setup and configuration of your RPi. But, it also fully documents a wide range of projects you can complete with the Pi and perhaps a few accessories. These range from a home music player, to a blog-posting web server, to an intelligent phone hookup, to a file server for your windows machines, to a way of expanding your Lego Mindstorms Robot and making the Brick more intelligent, to hooking up Arduino shields to the Raspberry Pi, all the way to building your own parallel supercomputer. This is an excellent and necessary guide for anyone who has a Raspberry Pi (of which over 2,000,000 single board computers exist); it is useful (unlike some other books long after you get an X Desktop or Python ">>>" prompt running) and will definitely keep your Raspberry Pi from sitting on the shelf. I particularly found Chapter 6 on Extending the Pi especially useful and the use of the Cooking Hacks Arduino adapter and arduPi library to run applications involving Arduino shields.

There is more than a little something for every user of the Raspberry Pi from the "Noob" novice to the most advanced electronics and computer science hacker. I highly recommend this book to anyone who owns or is even considering the RPi.

How to Spend the Rest of Your Life with the Raspberry Pi

"Raspberry Pi Hacks" is divided into six chapters and 65 hacks. A hack (in this context) is actually a little activity that you can do with your Raspberry Pi, ranging from setting up your operating system to sending your Raspberry Pi to near space in a balloon to creating a super computer. The authors, Ruth Suehle and Tom Callaway both work at Red Hat (Fedora), a Linux distributor. Ruth has a journalist background and Tom, engineering. This is a perfect match—a writer and an engineer. In addition, there are about a dozen hacks from contributing authors (or hackers).

For testing a representative sample of the hacks, I used a Model B (rev 2) Raspberry Pi with a TFT Color monitor, (sold as a rearview video monitor on a car.) My own first hack was to wire the monitor to plug into a wall outlet and connect up to my Raspberry Pi.) I used an old keyboard with a USB connection and a similarly configured mouse. I purchased a WiPi USB plug-in for a wireless link to the Internet. In one of the USB ports on the Raspberry Pi I plugged in a 4-slot USB hub. The monitor used the VGA port, and I plugged in a 4-Gig SD card with the Rasbian OS. (Raspian is a version of the Debian Linux OS.)

I divide the world of computing into two groups who write code--IT/SysAdmins and Programmers. I'm of the latter group, and the book's authors seem to be in the former group--with the added abilities of knowing how to write and engineer hardware. Much to the credit of this book and its authors, they do their best (which is excellent, by the way,) to show the nuances in IT operations—writing directly to the OS using CLI instead of a menu-driven set of selections. So while both authors represent Fedora (linux OS), they go out of their way to make sure that other versions of the Linux OS are represented and to show some command (CLI) differences. (This is very important.) So, if they start with the commands used with Red Hat, they'll show any slight differences you will find in Rasbian (Debian) and Unbuntu OS.

The non-IT type programs are few and far between. Most are done in Raspberry Pi's 'native' computer language, Python, but there are other examples in C++ ; however, while you're shown how to install full LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) systems--for FREE!--, you won't find instructions on how to write a PHP program that runs using LAMP components. ( it's not too difficult to find books and blogs that do.) Like I said, the authors are more IT types, and the book reflects that. For me, that's exactly what I need. I can take care of the programming on my own.

If you're a Reader of Make: magazine (makezine.com), you'll recognize the kind of projects -- micro and macro -- found in this book. They tend to be short, focused and a lot of fun. Some are strictly software -- like how to set up a static IP address on your Raspberry Pi, and others a lot more involved, like creating a controller for a 3D printer run by your Raspberry Pi. I like the projects that involve adding and using extension hardware like breadboards and cameras. (Hack #44 beckons me, but there's a good chance that launching my Raspberry Pi along with a camera and tracking device into near space -- around 70,000 feet-- would spell the end of my hardware and a visit from the FAA and even Homeland Security.)

Certain little crucial hacks (or even hackettes) include how to get the code from GiHub onto your computer. It's not difficult, but unless you know how, it might be somewhat confusing as you dig up the protocols. It's all in this book. The short hacks can be just as important as the bigger ones and just as fun.

One thing that irks me is the insistence of some programers to add a half a page of code that spells out the GNU Public License. A single line noting that the code is under the GNU Public License is enough. An even simpler idea would be to lay out the license at the beginning of the book in the front material and state that at all programs in the book fall under that license. If you're going to let any and everyone use your code; just let them use it. It's not like they're developing for a proprietary business app, and none of the code included is exactly rocket science level coding. With the simple C++ and Python code provided in the book, the copyright notice looks silly.

Other than the niggling aggravation of the superfluous copyright notices in some of the code, the rest of the book is a delight, and you can look forward to years of enjoyable hacks. More importantly, though, this book speaks to the goal of creating a low-cost computer for getting young people interested in computer development projects and ultimately, computer engineering and programming. (I can attest to the same interest-raising effect it has on people no longer young)l. The hacks in this book can get anybody interested in magical world of computing at the most affordable level.

Very detailed, used to understand architect specs for an upcoming project that does not yet have industry established standards. I am not an architect myself, so it was helpful to understand what one might be looking for in designing a new type of space saving system.

The ilustrations are the best part of this recipies book

Allende's book of recipies is not what some readers, like myself, might expect from the author of such good pieces of literature as The House of Spirits and The Infinite Plan (to name just two). Unlike Laura Esquivel, author of Like Water for Chocolate, Allende did not accomplished a work that put together the art of cooking and sensuality and still can be call literature, just a simple book of recipies. It can be said that part of the content of this book consists of some recycle material from previous works by Allende. However, the selection of the ilustrations and the art work is very good (and the edition certainly atractive).

Hace tiempo escuche a una persona decir: "que dificil es el mantener viva la llama del amor". Isable Allende logra en su libro, no solo revivir el placer por la vida, sino por los detalles que hacen que la vida tenga una verdadera razon de ser. Nada como el disfrutar de los pequenos placeres que la vida misma nos ofrece y que tenemos al alcanze de la mano. La pasion que tanto buscamos fuera de nosotros esta ahi, dentro de cada uno esperando ser rescatada del limbo al que la destinamos por el simple miedo de experimentar y ser sencillamente nosotros.

Como buena Peruana siempre he tenido gran respeto y admiraci�n por la Se�ora Allende , me parece realmente �ncreible como puede definir con tal exactitud la descripci�n de las cosas. Afrodita un libro claramente lleno de afrodis�acos pero tambi�n an�cdotas que pueden hacer a m�s de uno sonreir en el recuerdo. Gracias a Isabel Allende es que a la corta edad que tengo ha despertado en m� el placer por la lectura y el sosiego al escribir. Ser�a para m� un sue�o digno el conocerla alg�n d�a.

Excellent Resource for Writers

If you've ever visited Bryn's website, you might already be familiar with some of her lists for writers. I love lists in general (proud Type-A), but she does more than just jot down quick lists. The lists in this book are detailed and categorized to create a fantastic reference book for writers. Sure, you could grab a thesaurus to try and find a better verb and spend hours flipping through it because none of them quite fit, or you could go right to this book and search by the emotion or action your character needs to convey.

In addition to word lists, the book has an extensive section on names - first AND last that includes their origins. No need to google the latest list of baby names when you can just open this book and find the perfect character names to fit into the time period of your book.

One of my favorite parts about the book are the plot lists. There are pages and pages of suggestions for action plots, romance plots, family plots, workplace plots. Every writer knows the only way to get better at writing is to write as often as possible. Grab this book, flip it open to one of the plot lists and use it for prompts. Or use the word lists as a jumping off point.

Another great thing about this book is reading the lists made me think of things I could add to them. If you ever feel like you're stuck, just read through one of the sections and it'll get your mind spinning with possibilities. I recommend this book for all writers. You'll be happy to have it close at hand.

Being a writer I was very excited when I found out about this book. Often, your brain needs a little help with expressing certain ideas or feelings. The book didn't disappoint. Extremely thorough and in the whole well organized. I have already used it while writing and I am certain it will hold a special place in my writing toolbox.

Bryn's collection of Master Lists is a fabulous heuristic tool. No more wracking your brain for the right turn of phrase -- Bryn has sorted and compiled everything from descriptive phrases, to plot summaries, to character traits and names... Writer's block? Just run your eye down one of Bryn's lists to discover a new jumping off point.

Of course, no book is going to do the work for you -- a writer has to write. But this resource is wonderful for helping the writer easily sift through word choices, compare connotations, or find new direction. Many thanks, Bryn, for putting these lists together! I know they will be consulted over and over.
